Historia
Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom - all because of a reckless bargain her father struck. And since birth, she has been training to kill him. Betrayed by her family yet bound to obey, Nyx rails against her fate. Still, on her 17th birthday, she abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, disarm him, and break the 900-year-old curse he put on her people. But Ignifex is not what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle - a shifting maze of magical rooms - enthralls her.

Pretty good romance, awesome performance
Revisado: 05-24-20
I enjoyed the performance. The story reminded me of Phantom of the Opera as much as it did of Beauty and the Beast. The ending dragged on a bit too long. The main character's relationship with her sister was memorable.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Memorable
Revisado: 02-21-20
Were it not for the initial captivating sequences about a little abandoned girl in a marsh, I may not have gotten into this book. But they are just so good that it is worth the courtroom drama and the somewhat heavy-handed political correctness. Narration was good; the characters' voices maybe a little over-dramatized but enjoyable.

Historia
The dreaded day had finally come. World War II raged throughout Europe. A Nazi soldier knocks on the door of a farmhouse where Felix Culpa Schmidt lives with his family, including his brother, Willy, who has Down Syndrome. Felix becomes an unwilling soldier in the German army, forced to serve Adolph Hitler, a man who plans to kill thousands of "useless eaters" - citizens who are disabled or elderly - citizens like his brother Willy.

Strong Religious Overtones, Fascinating History
Revisado: 07-02-19
This book starts a little slow, focusing on a boy's spiritual crisis at the beginning of World War II. Once he enters the war and becomes involved in the historical Nazi Catholic underground, things heat up. Throughout, my favorite characterization was that of the boy's endearing, intrepid war dog.
Narration was solid.

Classic, well-written, a little slow
Revisado: 04-19-19
I read the book as a child and enjoyed it (although I never counted it among my very favourites). Seeing that it was narrated by Alex Jennings, I wanted to listen with my kids. We enjoyed it enough to get all the way through, and indeed the narration was wonderful, but for today's audience it is a little slow. The landscape descriptions were completely enthralling and I loved the family dynamics, as well as the aura of ancient mystery.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Nuanced portrait of two women
Revisado: 04-09-19
Beautiful, almost always gripping. Some torture scenes were difficult to bear. The ending is satisfying but not overly neat.
Narration was not my favorite - I sort of wish she didn't perform the French accents. 1.25 speed was perfect, though.

Has It All
Revisado: 04-23-18
I picked this out to bide the time until my next book. It took a minute to get used to some of the voices, which were difficult to hear, but I was quickly hooked. This story has violence, grief, mystery, psychology galore, legal intrigue, and even slapstick. It is by turns haunting, depressing, shocking, and always stimulating to the imagination.

Captivating, but not for those with weak stomachs
Revisado: 08-27-17
I've never heard any other version of this book, so I'm not sure if it's because this is the "author's cut", but it did seem overly swimming in gory details. I listened to the whole thing, though. because the character of Richard drew me in. Gaiman was a wonderful narrator.

Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

Insightful, but took a turn for the vulgar midway through
Revisado: 01-11-17
I chose this because I enjoy Anna onscreen. I loved the beginning, especially the first hand experience of becoming a successful actress. When she started talking about her first boyfriends, it became very explicit and sensational. I had to stop listening.
