Listening to this book has been an unexpected pleasure. There are so many ways an account like this can go wrong, I was hesitant to try the book -- I'm so glad I did! This is a clear, insightful account of a very compelling woman's life, told with great skill and respect, and WITHOUT melodrama or moral pronouncements. The author's calm, straightforward tone is perfect for this book. Overall, a wonderful experience.

I thought it would be fun to revisit this classic - and it was, for an hour or two. But I found myself wincing and cringing as the vulgarities and and clichés began to pile up. I tried to concentrate on the plot line and characters, but ... I had to throw in the towel long before the end of the book, sick to death of hearing about broads and more broads, tits and (incessantly!) more tits. Mr. Puzo could have done with a thesaurus - just for starters. How did I not notice this when I was 25? For a compelling look at the dark side, give me a Richard Price novel ANY day.

This book really held my attention. In spite of the dark subject, I looked forward to every minute I could spend listening. The situations and characters were all believable and intriguing; the scientific information was challenging but not impossible for the non-scientist; the writing style was very accomplished and engaging. The narrator seemed just right to me - crisp, clear, confidently in command of the material, and free of common annoying pitfalls (over-enunciation, mispronunciations, misplaced word emphases, annoying tone.) Highly recommend.

I admire Tom Hanks as an actor, and have enjoyed some of Ann Patchett's work, but neither the story nor the narration of this book held much interest. My mind kept wandering as I listened; I could really focus only when I tried to figure out why this book was so disappointing. I just didn't find the characters or story compelling, and the narration was - sorry - monotonous.

My favorite audiobook of all time. Fascinating setting and circumstances, utterly authentic characters, a plot so compelling I couldn't stop listening, and prose that is both down-to-earth and worthy of a poet. The narration is brilliant - I sought out other recordings by Grover Gardner just on the basis of this listen. After finishing the audiobook, I bought a hard copy so I could easily dip in and re-read favorite passages - and then had to buy a second copy to loan to friends, who also loved the story. I deeply admire everything about this wonderful work.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I was looking for a well-written story ... this author's "The Boys in the Boat" was one of my all-time favorites on Audible, so I bought this, on impulse, even though it was published some years earlier, and to not much acclaim. It's clearly a less-mature work, with many belabored and overworked descriptive passages, but the real deal-breaker was the narrator. After a half-hour of his grating, over-enunciated caw, I had to give up.
