Historia
Attacked and injected with a drug that slows his metabolism to a fraction of normal, Martin James becomes an unwilling time traveler who hurtles through the years. His children grow up, his wife grows older, and his only hope is finding the people who injected him in the first place - not an easy task when one day for Martin lasts four years. And while Martin James strives to find a cure before everyone he loves is gone, others are uncertain if his journey can be stopped at all.

Exhausting, and utterly boring.
Revisado: 12-27-16
To start with such a fascinating premise and to squander it so atrociously must be some sort of talent -- a credit to the author. :p
The book almost never stopped with the melodrama. It occasionally meandered into pseudoscientific paranoia about GMO food harming humans and various things like that. The main character is an unlikable, bratty child, who is unable to focus on anything but self pity and his own indignation at the changing culture as he is "syncing forward".
The book went on and on repeating this same theme of self pity and indignation. It should have ended at half its length. It was torturous to listened to so many hours of this predictable, boring nonsense. I would not recommend this one. There are many better sci Fi books.

Historia
A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

One of my favorite audiobooks
Revisado: 08-20-16
The narrator, Sean Pratt, is excellent for this story. Even though the sentences can get very long and meandering, he speaks with such a casual rhythm that it becomes very easy to understand. The voices and dialects are also very believable and consistent. Besides the performance, this book is fantastic in its own right. Everyone should read it or listen to it at least once. Since its such a long book, I think listening is the best option along with reading the endnotes separately (since its not included in audio).
The book is thought provoking, and uncomfortable at times. It confronts the gruesome reality of the pursuit of pleasure and happiness and success as being all of one nature, a possibly obsessive drive.

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Mind Wide Open comes a groundbreaking assessment of popular culture as it's never been considered before: through the lens of intelligence. Forget everything you’ve ever read about the age of dumbed-down, instant-gratification culture.

a good cultural commentary, a little redundant
Revisado: 04-27-16
Maybe it's because he's preaching to the choir in my case, but there were sections of this book that seemed a bit obvious and superfluous to his thesis. That said, there is plenty in this book that I would want everyone to read. The fashionable self deprecation in our culture should stop and this book gives good reasons why it should stop.

Historia
In what is considered one of Heinlein's most hair-raising, thought-provoking, and outrageous adventures, the master of modern science fiction tells the strange story of an even stranger world. It is 21st-century Luna, a harsh penal colony where a revolt is plotted between a bashful computer and a ragtag collection of maverick humans, a revolt that goes beautifully until the inevitable happens. But that's the problem with the inevitable: it always happens.

interesting portrayal of AI, but stunted politics
Revisado: 04-25-16
The idea behind AI consciousness was engaging. but when Heinlein started dealing with nitty gritty politics and war maneuvers, it immediately became boring. I can't remember a single thing that happened in the skirmishes. there were a bunch of threats, there were some rocks hurled from the moon to earth, but I had no investment in the point by point. anarchism as described here, looks to be an idiotic ideology. The "prof" sounds more like a villain from Ain rands books, and his sudden disappearance disappearance seemed contrived... I didn't care one way or another. It's not a bad sci fi, but there are many that are better.

Very fun, campy, nostalgic novel... but its simple
Revisado: 09-15-15
it's a very easy read; it feels most like a young adult novel. the themes are cliche, the romances are simple, the character development is straight forward. there is no moral ambiguity, or thought provoking decisions. the good guys are good, bad guys are bad and the ending feels like he was in a rush to just end it.
but its fun! It feeds into the nostalgia within all of us. even though I didn't live through the 80s, I felt the nostalgic tone and enjoyed the references vicariously through the author's enthusiasm.

When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity. Cloning, feel-good drugs, anti-aging programs, and total social control through politics, programming, and media: has Aldous Huxley accurately predicted our future? With a storyteller's genius, he weaves these ethical controversies in a compelling narrative that dawns in the year 632 A.F. (After Ford, the deity). When Lenina and Bernard visit a savage reservation, we experience how Utopia can destroy humanity.

Banal and outdated dystopic story
Revisado: 05-28-15
There's nothing in this narrative that hasn't been done better by another author. While it was probably very imaginative at the time it was written, today it is disappointing and boring. If dystopia is what you seek, try Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. She makes a far more compelling and plausible story about bioengineering. If science fiction is what you seek, try the robot series by Asimov. But I can't recommend this novel because it offers neither a compelling cerebral experience, nor adventure. The first few chapters and the very end are the only worthwhile segments.

great performance but the movie is slightly better
Revisado: 05-16-15
Pablo Schreiber does an excellent job voicing the story and all of the narration. However, there is something darkly humorous and charming about the movie interpretation that wasn't quite achieved in the original text. While the violence in the book was vivid, and so delightfully extreme that the movie couldn't possibly match it, the Patrick Bateman character in the movie, as portrayed by christian bale, seemed so much more cohesive. Sometimes the dining scenes in the text, while interesting and descriptive, didn't offer any new insight into Bateman's character -- and were therefore, forgettable. on the other hand, every dinner scene in the movie was tied into some critical character development.
definitely give this a listen for the blood and gore and torture... that is undeniably well done, but go for the movie again for a better overall story experience.
