Wanted to like this one but basically just paints a picture of what we live everyday… too many things, too many thoughts, too much overall - so reduce. How to reduce? Give away or sell what you don’t need. Haven’t touched it in 2 months? Probably a candidate to go… That’s pretty much the whole short story here. Stuff you already know. No new tips, tricks or motivations. Just a kind-voiced narrator with a slight British accent reading a pretty much “duh” article you’ve read a hundred times. I’m not motivated or encouraged. Just some nice background voice while doing daily chores. Sorry but that’s the best I can offer in all truth…

I was enticed to read this book because Seth Godin was one of the authors. The Audible release date is 2006 but after listening to all the outdated references I researched and found out the printed book was published in 1996. There are some good concepts in the book, but there are huge sections about trying to promote your business by using direct mail (renting mailing lists, etc.) and using pagers and fax machines. This should be websites and email now which is an entirely different venture with different concerns that listed in the book.
They talk about producing printed newsletters (blogs weren't invented back then) and brochures. I kept listening to see if I could pull out nuggets of value that I could apply to today's world but there is just too much of a gap in marketing tools from 1996 and today (20 years later).
I highly recommend to find another book. It was probably good in its day, but it's just too old to be of value for today's entrepreneur.

I read Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Mists of Avalon" book about 15 years ago and loved it. Please note that the audiobooks that make up the full "Mists of Avalon" story is broken into 4 parts on the Audible website: 1) Mistress of Magic, 2) The High Queen, 3) King Stag, and 4) Prisoner in the Oak. It can be rather expensive to buy all 4 parts - 4 credits or the currently listed price. I was confused about the splitting up of the sections because technically it is one book so I wanted to pass my experience on to others who may also be confused about why there are 4 Mists of Avalon books listed when you do a search on the title.

I loved the narration and storytelling of this book done by Davina Porter. Her spoken word really brought the tale to life and I came to see her voice as the voice of the characters and it enriched my experience of the story. Some spoken word narrators detract from the story, but Davina's narration brought a great story to an even higher level of enjoyment for me. If I had the choice to read or hear the book again, I would definitely opt for hear!

I appreciated Davina's narration even more when I listened to "The Forest House" and "Lady of Avalon" audiobooks also by Marion Zimmer Bradley but narrated by Rosalyn Landor. I found Rosalyn's voice too news-announcer-like and flat for my taste. I wish Davina had narrated those books too!

To review the story itself, "The Mists of Avalon" is the classic King Arthur tale told by a women's point of view. It gives wonderful life to the women imagined to the in the King Arthur experience and celebrates the power, weakness, and experience of the women. If you have interest in the stories of that genre and enjoy a tale where the women can be the heroes, this is the book for you. These female characters are not just empty, mindless window dressing as many Medieval tales would have you believe. I loved the experience of the story and the drama of the tale that Ms. Bradley weaves. I highly recommend this book and the narration makes it even better!

Hope for the unemployed!

Revisado: 12-05-11

I chose to read this book because I am unemployed for the second time in 3 years. 3 years ago, the company I worked for laid off all the employees and sold the building they owned. They pretty much went under. It was a very sad time for the many of us who had worked there over 10 years. I was unemployed for 14 months and finally landed another job which I held for a year until they laid off my entire department only to rehire the same positions for salaries of $10-15K less (we were never offered the option to accept pay cuts). I am a skilled project manager and marketer, but the Boston job-seeking environment is brutal and many hiring managers are biased against hiring the currently unemployed for their open positions. This is not just my paranoia - I hear many hiring managers who are directly told by their supervisors to look for younger candidates who are currently employed. Some help wanted ads even state "unemployed candidates need not apply."
This book, I hoped, would provide me with some ideas for where our economy is headed and where it could go if we laid the groundwork to get masses of people back to work. I know there's no panacea, but I wanted to be aware of some ideas for how our country could grow to be stronger and how we can get people, like me, back to work who are willing to work hard, at reduced salaries, and put long hours if necessary. We are not afraid to work or work hard, we just need the opportunity. I was looking for someone who could help explain to me how the U.S. could make this happen.
I found Bill's ideas very sound and compelling. The book starts by explaining how he had worked hard to put the U.S. in a good economic situation and when he left office unemployment was low and there was a government budget surplus. He explains where a lot of the surplus money went and how we got into the big debt hole we are now in. I think he does a good job of looking at the situation from a 30,000 foot view and not slamming any particular political viewpoint. He talks solely about the actions taken by each administration and how those actions led to the situation we currently find ourselves in. He holds government individuals accountable for their decisions and doesn't slam them or give them a pass based on their particular party affiliation.
Presenting a list of over 30 suggestions for how we can improve the economy (which I found very helpful and inspiring), Bill gives props to many political leaders who are not Democrats. This is not a "Democrats are perfect, everyone else is messed up" tirade. He really takes a broad perspective view of the economic situation and provides his intelligently-derived suggestions for how we can move toward economic prosperity and get people back in jobs rather than leaving them on the unemployment payrolls. He talks about how we need a new, strong industry to focus on to create jobs and prosperity. This industry, he believes, is alternative energy sources and we need to move fast before other countries dominate this market and leave us to need to find another booming industry. We should be putting smart and targeted business ventures into place immediately that will make us a worldwide solution provider for alternative energy - and currently we are not even close.
I liked that the book was narrated by Bill himself. His voice has been damaged a bit from so many years of talking so it's not as smooth-sounding as it used to be, but I always enjoy hearing the author narrate the book themselves because they know how it is intended to be read and put the emphasis in the correct places. Bill keeps his tone very even and calm even though, in places, I might have liked him to show more emotion to motivate the U.S. government to make changes NOW, not later. I think he could have done well to impress upon the audience that we have a window of opportunity to make the changes he outlines and that window is quickly closing. Once the window is closed, we will need to start over and to look to a brand new strategy. And who knows how long it will take for us to find the "next great thing" that will pull this economy out of the hole it's currently in. Hopefully this will happen before there are bread and soup lines in every major city in the U.S. filled by people willing and able to work.
The book gave me hope that there are viable answers out there. They just need to be acted upon - and quickly.

Psychology theory, not a dieter's book

I was intrigued by the title because I thought the book could give me tips for weight loss. Why do I eat what I do? What can I do to change it? The book is a very good psychology theory book on why we eat what we do and backs up those findings with live studies performed by college professors and students. The findings are real and make sense, but if you're looking for quick weight loss tips or several chapters to help you with uncontrolled eating, this is not the book for you. I was looking for tips on weight loss and found some nuggets of wisdom (and common sense) buried in lots of data and studies. I rated this book relatively highly because, as a former psychology student, I did enjoy hearing about the studies and their results. But if I was just looking for quick diet answers, this book would have been disappointing to me.
In a nutshell,
- Think about the mindless things you eat out of habit. The author, Brian, provides the rule of thumb that you should take a "0" off the end of the calorie count of some snack you habitually eat and that will be the weight you will gain in a year if you continue that habit. For example, if you eat a snack every night that has 100 calories, in a year you will have gained 10 pounds. The reverse, he says, is also true. If you cut out a snack every night that has 100 calories, you will lose 10 pounds if your calorie intake is otherwise balanced.

Excellent content with disappointing delivery

Revisado: 10-09-08

I had listened to "Mornings on Horseback" by David McCullough and it left me wanting to find out more about the Roosevelt family. "Mornings" focused on Teddy Roosevelt's early years -- past college and into his early political undertakings that led him to seek the presidency. But it stops before getting into his presidential years and I was also curious to learn about FDR and Eleanor. I had hoped this book would cover that area -- and it did. But this publication sorely pales in comparison to David McCullough's writing and Edward Hermann's narration. Rather than telling a compelling story, I feel like I am back in school listening to a teacher lecture on facts. And the narrator is quite expressionless and the audio quality is horribly "tinny". I had checked this review area to see if others had thought the same and was shocked to see only 2 excellent reviews listed. I think the content is probably worth trudging through the audio delivery, and I did. But it felt like more of a toil than not. Listen to the sample reading carefully before making your decision to purchase this audiobook. If you're willing to put up with the poor audio delivery, then definitely go ahead with the purchase. But if you're put off by that, then think carefully beforehand.

The narrator, Edward Herrmann, has a great voice and it was a pleasure to listen to his reading. I didn't recognize his name when I purchased this audiobook, but I sure recognize his voice. You've heard it a million times in voiceovers and just never knew the name. His reading is very pleasant, clear and unobtrusive.
I truly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. So much so that I wondered why I didn't pick the unabridged version instead of the abridged. When I looked it up I found the reason is Audible only offers the abridged. I would have liked to have heard even more. This is a great book to find out about Teddy Roosevelt's roots and upbringing. I wanted it to go on and talk more about his presidency, but the detail stopped just before that time period and gave a quick synopsis of his presidential years. I was hooked and I would have loved to have heard more... it was that good. I actually listened to parts of the story twice because there is so much detail and so many relatives listed it's hard to get it all on the first listen. I highly recommend this audiobook to those looking to expand their education and be entertained at the same time. I would have loved public school history classes if they had provided material like this!
