Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Historia
The year that changed everything for the Beatles was 1966 - the year of their last concert and of Revolver, their first album created to be listened to rather than performed. This was the year the Beatles risked their popularity by retiring from live performances, recording songs that explored alternative states of consciousness, experimenting with avant-garde ideas, and speaking their minds on issues of politics, war, and religion. Music journalist and Beatles expert Steve Turner investigates the enormous changes that took place in the Beatles' lives and work during 1966.

Essential reading!
Revisado: 06-23-19
The most important 12 months in the overalll arc of the Beatles story is fully fleshed out here. What happens in ‘66 lays the foundation for everything that follows. I have followed and studied the Beatles all my life (I’m 67) and learned much from this book.

Historia
Uncle Tom's Cabin was the best-selling novel of the 19th century and the second best-selling book of that century, following the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. In 1855, three years after it was published, it was called "the most popular novel of our day." A thrilling and important piece of American literature!

Essential reading for Civil War buffs
Revisado: 11-21-18
Th Civil War didn’t start at Fort Sumter. The first shots were fired in Bloody Kansas, Harpers Ferry, and with the publication of this book. As relevant today as in the 1850s.
My only ding is the reading, sometimes in a whisper, and difficult to follow.

Historia
This book fleshes out the man and reveals the workings of a great military mind and a warm, understanding, and generous human being. It shows all the facets of the general during the war; at the conclusion, when he was an outspoken proponent of a reasonable peace which would allow the South to rejoin the Union; and after the war, when he served as president of Washington College.

a little disappointed
Revisado: 09-18-10
The Civil War ended at hour #3 of this 12 hour audiobook, and focused almost entirely on Lee's life after the War, particularly his letters to his wife and children. Letter after letter to his wife and children... Shed no light on his thoughts and reflections on his role in the war, or the generals that he commanded. My takeaway was an appreciation for Lee's skills as a man of letters. It's a lost art in our times, but I was looking for more.

Historia
In June 1876, on a desolate hill above a winding river called "the Little Bighorn", George Armstrong Custer and all 210 men under his direct command were annihilated by almost 2,000 Sioux and Cheyenne. The news of this devastating loss caused a public uproar, and those in positions of power promptly began to point fingers in order to avoid responsibility.

Best book this year for me! It captured my attention from the very beginning and held it to the end. Well researched and richly detailed portrayal of the post-Civil War period - cities, outposts and on the frontier. All of the characters, soldiers and Indians, come to life in vivid detail. Totally recast my knowledge of Custer, and painted a completely different picture of him and his role in pacifying the Souix, from the superficial one we all got in high school. Covers his life from the close of the Civil War to the tragedy at Little Big Horn, to the aftermath that occured at Wounded Knee. This one will be tough to beat.
