I bit my lip to blood listening to this audiobook. I'd say that the memoir actually centers on a theme of a heart-wrenching love story where the only happily ever after the author gets is her son. The “ever after" however is snatched away when the evil of drugs gets involved. (On a side note: Even without drugs, teenagers go through chemical and structural changes in their brains and need, together with their parents, constant psychological support.) The author’s faith helped her forgive the son’s killer, but I’m not sure if we, the readers, can do the same.

Whether in retirement or not, people that take risks live interesting lives

This audiobook is perfect for listening while sitting on a porch with a cup of hot cocoa, enjoying a cozy evening and is great for those who’s tired of a busy city life. My mind enjoyed hearing about vibrant Spanish community. The characters made me smile constantly. One of the ladies said something like, “I promised to only have ten dogs, so when another dog came after the ninth, I called it ‘a half.’” And as my goofy dad grew chickens on the balcony of our apartment, I liked hearing stories about hens and roosters too.

When I experienced an earth quake, I had no idea what to do. Reading books like this can, in a way, prepare us psychologically. Also going to try one day to sleep on the floor at an airport. Sounded like so much fun. And there is another memoir by this author she mentions in this book, something about being a dominatrix!, that I now wish were in Audible format too.
