Historia
There is a world. One of endless night, surrounded by an even deeper darkness. Filled with nightmares come to life, twisted shapes that slink to windows and ease open doors, sliding across floors to look down on helpless faces. There is another world. A bright world, so bright it burns. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again.

My favorite novel
Revisado: 07-27-24
Every aspect of this novel is different than a lot of what you see in Sanderson book, but is somehow so expressive of what the Cosmere is about; and what makes Sanderson such an enjoyable read. The pacing is absolutely perfect, better than any Sanderson book and somehow feels more whole and compete. The recommendedation to read at least storm light archives beforehand does add secret details but isn't necessary. The story is so heartfelt and beautiful I would recommend anyone to read it.

A slow burn, but a worthwhile one
Revisado: 06-16-24
I had gotten about 17 hours into Elantris before I just couldn't handle how much at times it felt like a slog to listen through. I read a lot of Brandon Sanderson so knew where he was going with it and I knew it would be worth while, but I couldn't make myself care; and yet I persevered and finished it. My review goes as follows:
The first 5 hours are okay and have an interesting set up, The next 10 hours are overly drawn out royal squabbling involving privileged characters that are difficult to care about, Then there is about 2-3 hours of redemption where you really hope you're finally at the tipping point of plot and narrative, and finally there is the last 8-10 hours where the plot really shines through and makes it a worthwhile interesting read.
It is truly those last 10ish hours where you're finally excited again to learn what's about to happen but it can be difficult to convince yourself to make it there. Which seems almost intentional due to the major plot points of the book and Sanderson attention to detail but while Elantris will stand out to me in a positive light and I will always be curious to find out more of that part of the Cosmere, it can really be boring for long drawn out times.
My largest complaint is the narrator though, his voice and manner of speaking come across very hoity, so much so he sounds like privileged royalty that is mocked in other Sanderson books. His different voices are okay but there's only maybe 4 of them and there is no change of pace of inflection between characters who have the same voice. This leads to confusion between characters and lends heavily to the first 18hours monotony, as well as a lot of characters just not having a lot of long term presence in the listeners mind.
Overall if there was a true sequel to Elantris I would listen to it but I cannot express in words just hoe excited I am to not hear that narrators voice again.

If your expecting an ending that's satisfying dont
Revisado: 05-15-20
Other than the narrator change which is very disappointing, the book is a solid meh. Compared to the other 2 books this one is definitely sad conclusion. This series seemed to be going a lot of places and it really feels like the final thrid is very rushed.
