Historia
Centuries have passed since the last crusader knight laid down his sword, but the Crusades continue to hold sway over our world. Because the Crusades have been so consequential to history, it's essential to understand the context, motivations, and preconditions of these dramatic military campaigns. In doing so, you'll not only get a fresher understanding of the Crusades, you'll discover surprising truths about why (and how) they were fought.

Good narration, engaging
Revisado: 07-27-22
The author was a surprisingly good narrator, that's a huge plus. My only regret was that the review of crusade after-effects seemed a bit short.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

Underwhelming storytelling
Revisado: 07-13-22
Not enough storytelling, and too many adjectives - I know that it was a "horrifying experience", I just heard an eyewitness account, no need to re-summarize things again. But overall ok.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Chaotic structure, subpar narration
Revisado: 06-30-22
The book was certainly interesting at times, but some chapters interrupt the chronological, linear presentation (a plus for a non-fictional book), and the narrator keeps on repeating words and phrases - with annoyingly unnecessary pauses - which somewhat limited my enjoyment of the book.

Historia
Every day of your life is spent surrounded by mysteries that involve what appear to be rather ordinary human behaviors. What makes you happy? Where did your personality come from? Why do you have trouble controlling certain behaviors? Why do you behave differently as an adult than you did as an adolescent?Since the start of recorded history, and probably even before, people have been interested in answering questions about why we behave the way we do.

The guy thinks paranormal is real
Revisado: 01-17-20
I wonder if I now can trust anything he said. The book seemed moderately engaging until the chapter on paranormal. The guy framed that chapter as "here's some evidence, make your own mind", but heavily implied that paranormal was real. He kept on referring to "robust analyses" and meta-reviews, even though the myth of paranormal being real - including the famed autoganzfeld - has long been absolutely discredited. He explicitly mentioned that there were two sides to the debate, with some researchers believing in it and others not. No. Absolutely no. Same story as with climate change. A few crazies don't qualify as "the other side of the debate". It's not a matter of perspective. The guy presents bs as a scientific finding. I can't now relax and listen to the book - I will need to scan it for bs, which is the kind of mental work I hoped to avoid by buying one of the Great Courses.

Better than I expected

I was afraid that it would be a typical voo-voo self-help just-think-positive overconfident-but-incompetent-author book. It wasn't. The book nicely packaged some plausible research in quite practical advice.

Interesting, but not entirely truthful
Revisado: 08-10-17
The first half of the book - about cultural dimensions - was interesting. The second part was full of a) outdated stereotypes (the stark cultural features, like a man kissing a man to say goodbye in Soviet Union, aren't there anymore and hardly ever were...), b) overemphasis on positive and peace-loving aspects of non-English cultures (some cultures still cling to their medieval foundations, which were all but peaceful and kind). Overeducated CEOs in author's classes aren't representative of their more conservative, and often, intolerant compatriots.. Overall, I'm glad I bought this book as it gave me a different perspective on other cultures, but at times the author took appreciating everything/everybody to an extreme.

interesting content, annoying delivery

Revisado: 04-23-16
I did find a few interesting ideas in the book and I praise the authors for that. I'd however condense the ideas in a smaller volume. Plus, I did struggle to relate to the us culture reference, particularly to the us-only sports.
