Excruciatingly awful performance
Revisado: 04-18-25
For many minutes straight, you are treated to the disgusting, smacking, chomping eating sounds of one of the characters. An important conversation is going on at the time of awfulness. Not much good to balance out this.
If you have misophonia, avoid this one. NOT worth it.

What an awesome experience to listen to this
Revisado: 04-01-23
I knew the story, as this is based on a pretty well-known series of horrific murders back in 1940s England. But what a chilling dramatization of how some of the details may have played out. I realize true crime stories that are dramatized take some creative treatment to some of the conversations and maybe even details. This works well here. So did the loud, sudden thundering sound that we hear when there is a gunshot. Chilling. I felt like it added to the atmosphere and overall, EXCELLENT.
Seriously, a great drama. High-quality acting, audio, and story.

Historia
Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson ( Pulp Fiction) rocks this mock bedtime story, capturing a hilarious range of emotions as the voice of a father struggling to get his child to sleep. Go the F**k to Sleep is a bedtime book for parents who live in the real world, where a few snoozing kitties and cutesy rhymes don’t always send a toddler sailing blissfully off to dreamland.

Like Samuel L Jackson, Not Crazy About this Book
Revisado: 05-30-20
Samuel L. Jackson is the best. He does provide a small amount of entertainment with this book, but....yeah, I think this one has been overrated. There are mildly amusing parts, nothing what I'd call LOL funny.
To be honest, it would be forgettable if it were not for all the F-bombs it contained. Maybe I am just getting old, but I can't be on board with this. This is a story that is the point of view of a father trying to coax his child to go to sleep. I sincerely doubt Jackson would ever talk like that to his child in reality, but for the sake of reviewing this book, I don't see how anyone can find anything that entertaining about a father stressing every point with the F-bomb.
I don't mean to take it more seriously than I should, but...it's just not believable on any level, really. Few parents would LOL at the idea of their child being so accustomed to hearing and using those words that they'd use them on another children, or at school. Whatever the case, I can only be honest with my own reaction and say six minutes is six minutes more than I am willing to waste on giving this a second listen.

Historia
This book is for listeners of true crime podcasts and audiences of both fiction and true-crime nonfiction. It's the true story of first-generation Irish-American nurse Jane Toppan, born as Honora Kelley. Jane Toppan was absolutely a monster, but she did not start out that way. When Jane was a young child, her father abandoned her and her sister to the Boston Female Asylum. From there, Jane was indentured to a wealthy family who changed her name, never adopted her, and wrote her out of the will.

Gifted Storytelling - Rare in True Crime Genre
Revisado: 05-30-20
Mary Kay McBrayer narrates this true crime, and she is perfect for the job. The tone of the story itself is probably not what most people would expect of a historic true crime. It has a "dramatized" feel to it, but it works. Trust me. I have read and listened to many, many books in the genre.
Presenting the setting of a crime cannot be easy, even for more contemporary murder cases. This is not just referring to the geographical and time period. McBrayer is great at showing you what it must have been like for Jane Toppan, who was apparently born with needs that couldn't be satisfied by healthy relationships and who had the additional misfortune of being abandoned, neglected, then used for labor and frequently physically abused. No one was THERE for Jane, who could only watch and interact with people that appeared to lead normal lives. This true crime story shows you how those phases of Jane's life played out.
McBrayer doesn't often leave Jane alone for long periods of time by going into lengthy clinical explanations of the crimes and their origins. That's why (to me), this book is remarkable as a true story: the people (the victims and the survivors alike) actually existed, yet they are told so well they seem as "knowable" as the most carefully created characters of good fiction.
For some of the reasons that this book shines, it might not completely satisfy every true crime lover. It certainly humanizes the "bad" people, while not leaving out the detailed context that this cruelty emerged in. I highly recommend it.

Matt Berry, brilliant as always
Revisado: 05-30-20
With a voice like that, he could do voice-overs for radio adverts and still be entertaining and appealing. The episodes contained are brief, too brief would be my only complaint. But they are funny and imaginative. You won't be disappointed.

Matt Berry is brilliant. Watch Toast of London and see if you don't agree. You will LYAO.
Also, his voice is perfect for narrating, and was the obvious choice. Berry portrays the character to the hilt. Bravo!
Don't miss his music, either. I have feasted on all he has produced on iTunes, and can never get enough.

DNA. DNA proves this book's lies
Revisado: 04-28-20
This book is full of lies. Please do not waste your time. Read the supreme court documents to learn how Rodney Reed habitually blitz-attacked strange women, beating them and raping them. His DNA was found in multiple victims. Please understand this. His DNA was found in raped women and girls, one was just twelve years old. His DNA was found on and in the dead raped woman, Stacey Stites, who was engaged and in love with another man, and was absolutely NOT having a consensual relationship with Rodney Reed.
Please, please be cautious in what you consider a good source. This author has lied to you. Reed is a very dangerous, violent man. It is documented in black and white that it is his way to savagely rape women and then claim to have had relationships with them.
I don't say this to be mean. I am saying this because it is very important that corrupt messages do not go unchallenged. Be against the death penalty, as I am. But do NOT support the cruel, absolutely dishonest cause of freeing Reed.

Casting the Runes - this alone is worth it
Revisado: 04-28-20
Marvelous versions of the spooky stories of M.R. James. The "Casting the Runes" story alone is set in modern day London and is a masterpiece of dread...It is difficult to portray the believer of the paranormal in a way that conveys the threat and malevolence that the Carswell character does (I believe it is Reece Shearsmith who is the voice of this person)...but it works.
All the stores are good, some even more riveting than the others, but so worth it. Highly recommended.

Retired bank manager George Pearmain is apparently dead. According to the behaviour of everyone around him, it seems he is no more. Not only that, but his mother has also passed away – and on the eve of her 99th year. Not only that, it could be that they were both murdered. Apart from that he feels fine.

I want Nigel Williams as my friend
Revisado: 04-28-20
This is funny storytelling. Don't you hate it when you wake up dead and your wife is berating you for being a lay-about when your mother has just passed on this very same morning? George Pearmain is having that kind of day and even being dead doesn't spare him the company of his family who are either neurotic dingbats or overbearing control freaks. Who has visited this comedy / tragedy on poor George, though? I won't say more, but I really, truly enjoyed this book.
Nigel Williams, you are a proven genius to me, you made me LMAO with the audiobook "HR" BBC Comedy series, then I found this and it cured my rampant anxiety I usually suffer on my long trips to visit a doctor. Thank you, again and again!
