Disappointing
Revisado: 03-24-25
I generally like Joseph Finder stories, but this one misses the mark. Seems like he painted himself into a corner at the end and to escape uses a number of implausible arcs to tie up loose ends.
Main characters are interesting and compelling enough, but narrator doesn't do them justice. Sometimes changes vocal characteristics mid sentence. Also, many voices sound the same and hard to tell whose speaking at times.

Historia
On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened. Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it.

Definitely Worth the Time
Revisado: 01-24-23
The report is part of an American history lesson that we better learn from or our country is in trouble. Although many parts of it repeat previous chapters, the overall impact is significant. Bottom line - an American president tried to retain office by lying to his supporters and getting them ginned up to attack their own country. The case is readily made.
I enjoyed the multiple narrators. It gave the feel of it being read by everyday Americans who care about their country. I realize it was likely done to get it all recorded quickly for release, but it is a nice effect nonetheless.
Only criticism - skip the Raskin epilogue unless you really enjoy DNC talking points. It is rife with left wing rhetoric and a guise for advocating the end of the electoral college.

The Trump Tapes explodes with the exclusive, inside story of Trump’s performance as president—in his own words as he is questioned, even interrogated by Woodward, on the president’s key responsibilities from managing foreign relations to crisis management of the coronavirus pandemic. This is the job Trump seeks again. How did he do the first time? This is the authentic answer, laying bare his repeated failures, obsessions, and grievances.

Fascinating Listen!
Revisado: 11-22-22
It is incredibly fascinating to hear Trump in his own words (even when most of those words are repeated over and over), and to hear the evolution of the relationship between him and Woodard. After COVID hit, Woodard almost became more of an advisor than an interviewer.
But like with most of his advisors, Trump dismissed most of what he was telling him.
Trump is certainly a unique individual, and whether you like him or despise him, it is definitely worth hearing his own words as he tries to convince Woodard that he is the most prolific president in history, and the one that has done the most for African Americans since Lincoln. What is most fascinating is that you get the sense that he really believes it.

Melodrama and Plot Holes

Extremely melodramatic and stilted dialogue, plot holes you can drive a Mack truck through, and a right leaning political undercurrent. What's not to like?

Historia
This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

Historia
Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent 12 years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell.

Definitely Mark Twain
Revisado: 09-01-22
I wondered how a book about a 15th century French peasant girl would work being written by Mark Twain, but he pulls it off. One of the best lines when referring to the bishop that headed Joan's persecution, if he were to make it to heaven is "...but what would he do? He wouldn't know anyone there." Classic Twain humor!

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Great book and an amazing story!
Revisado: 06-03-22
In our current societal climate, this story is a reminder that one good action can have a lasting and profound impact. It is a hopeful story when we are constantly bombarded by stories of man's inhumanity to man.
The narrator does a great job with inflection, accents and overall storytelling. Listen to this book and you won't be disappointed!

Historia
From the dark days of World War II through the Cold War, Sergey A. Kondrashev was a major player in Russia’s notorious KGB espionage apparatus. Rising through its ranks through hard work and keen understanding of how the spy and political games are played, he “handled” American and British defectors, recruited Western operatives as double agents, served as a ranking officer at the East Berlin and Vienna KGB bureaus, and tackled special assignments from the Kremlin.

Historia
Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

Meh, Not Up to Par
Revisado: 11-04-21
I actually have reconciled with Scott Brick as the narrator. Yes, he is not Dick Hill, but his Reacher voice has improved and overall does a decent job.
But the story this time is uninspired and overly implausible. Too many things that just nag at you, similar to the inconsistencies that often bother Reacher. Only, unlike his, there is no good resolution to them. Like all the dead people never being reported to the police by the ME.
Also, [Spoiler ALERT] at the end Reacher leaves a vehicle full of nerve gas at the side of the road for anyone to find? Seems very unReacher like.
If Lee Child is passing the baton to his son, I'm not sure Reacher will survive the exchange.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.
