How To Have An Effect On Our Politics
Revisado: 03-24-20
Eitan Hersh does a brilliant job of demonstrating how much of what we think of as being politically engaged is really hobbyism. He backs up his arguments with convincing case studies of individuals who really accomplished political change by engaging people at the community level. Professor Hersh cites many political science studies and his own work to back up his arguments. He concludes the book by including himself in his own critique and detailing the steps he has taken and urges others to take to break out of this trap of hobbyism.
I give this book my highest recommendation for all those who are frustrated by where our current national politics has taken us and are looking for a different path to make real change.

A Masterful Review
Revisado: 07-07-19
This is a masterful review of Ancient Greek history with particular relevance to our current time. I found it well written and absorbing. The discussions of the development of democracy in the city states, the status of women, slaves, ‘outsiders’ and the decline of the Classical Era were very well done.

Under the aegis of machine learning in our data-driven machine age, computers are programming themselves and learning about - and solving - an extraordinary range of problems, from the mundane to the most daunting. Today it is machine learning programs that enable Amazon and Netflix to predict what users will like, Apple to power Siri's ability to understand voices, and Google to pilot cars.

What a good introduction!
Revisado: 05-23-19
This was a good introduction. I am a novice to this field, but it certainly piqued my interest. I particularly liked Domingos’ parsing of learning algorithms into five schools. It really made me want to learn more. I also thought the narration helped—a great experience!

Compelling, Well Done!

Wonderful story. Well written. The narration was excellent. It was hard to stop listening. Even better to learn that it was based on actual events and the importance this story had in the author's own life.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Wonderful listen!
Revisado: 07-18-17
I enjoyed this book. The 'insider's view' of the Senate was fascinating. Finding out what a Senator actually does was truly illuminating. There were several points where in the words of the old cliche I was truly 'laughing out loud'. It was a bonus that Franken is such a good narrator.

Historia
Covering the pivotal years 1861-1864, General Ulysses S. Grant leads us in his own words from Fort Sumter to his appointment as commander of all the armies of the North. Grant remembers his experiences with the key players of the day, takes us onto the battlefields, and recounts the twists and turns of fate. Grant was a failed peacetime soldier, failed farmer, failed woodcutter, failed bill collector, and 38-year-old clerk in a harness store in the spring of 1861. By 1864, he was directing all the Union forces.
