Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Unbelievable reality to grasp for somebody coming from outside of JD Vance's world
Revisado: 02-06-17
It was heartbreaking to follow along with this account of what the Hillbilly folks the author describes know as their lives.
JD Vance illuminates how far apart the world of America's middle class city kids are from the working class whites.
The author credits his breaking free from the almost certain gloomy future he was living into, to the statistic anomaly of a whole barrage of support factors that happened to be present in his life but that weren't available to most of the kids he grew up with.
This book renders a valuable service to readers from all social classes. A valuable eye opener for the judgmental amongst us white middle class people who extrapolate that our privilege was equally available to all white people, dismissing the finer distinctions of the realms of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

I wish Mark were less abstract in this book
Revisado: 01-10-17
Great overall message and several stories and concepts resonated strongly with me.
Mark defines what makes good criteria for personal values, contemplates humanity's freedom to choose what we give f*$&s about and shares stories from his personal experience.
Whenever Mark shares from his life, I've found his writing to be extremely relatable.
Unfortunately his talent to distill the foundations behind the breakthroughs he's experiences does not translate into developing abstract philosophical concepts convincingly.

Loved the insight into the mind of a corporate baller
Revisado: 10-03-16
Here's a guy with common sense, a strong moral compass and great work ethic who managed to turn these assets into a tremendous fortune.
Not to steal Greg's thunder, you should read the book yourself if you want to know what Greg's five steps are, but here are some of my favorite concepts, paraphrased from memory in my own words:
We all make thousands of decisions every day, yet most of us have no process to figure out how any of them affect our lives. Looking at how the 5 Fs are affected is a good start:
Faith
Family
Friends
Fitness
Finances
There are two kinds of companies or people that need a turnaround. Those who are at the very bottom, about to fail and those that are satisfactorily underperforming. What matters is how you're doing in relation to your potential and not in absolute terms.
You shouldn't ever blame your fourth wife for what the first one did.
You're better off making twenty decisions today, getting two of them wrong and spending a month to fix your mistakes than you would be spending one month making one perfect decision.
If life were a poker table with chips of differing value up for grabs, it pays to pay attention to how much each chip is worth before starting to grab the ones close by. Most people tackle their to-do lists not considering which action will have the biggest impact but rather starting with the easiest items first.
Work life balance is a bit of a myth, we should be aiming for work life integration instead.

Historia
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, and then to Kenya....

Extraordinary insight into an intriguing mind
Revisado: 09-20-16
There clearly cannot be an easy way to express your thoughts on the complexities of experiencing life and in particular youth as a black man in the U.S. and still Barack Obama has mastered the carpentry of words to the extent that the events he recounts are even relatable to somebody like myself who grew up with all the privileges of being a white male growing up in the Western world. Exceptional read.

Historia
In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the human scale principle, using the Velcro Theory of Memory, and creating curiosity gaps. Along the way, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds—from the infamous “kidney theft ring” hoax to a coach’s lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony—draw their power from the same six traits.

I could feel myself getting smarter as I was listening to this book.
If you ever wondered why nobody cared about what you had to say even if your idea was brilliant, Chip and Dan will answer your question if you let them so you can get your message across in the future.
