No character development. A bullying drunkard father, meek mother who wouldn’t defend her children, an angry daughter, & a foolish husband. Rinse & repeat abuse on the next generation. Narrator had no warmth, timing, or character voices. Couldn’t finish this mess.

But not enough to redeem it. Clichéd, predictable plot & poor narration rendered it difficult to finish. I stuck it out in honor of my friends who are VI teachers (one of whom is visually impaired & shared her beautiful guide dog with us) & Mobility Therapists. I missed that the book was fiction & would rather read a true story on this topic.

Love Mr. Rogers, couldn’t finish the book

My rating is for Mr. Rogers, not the book. Listening to Fred Rogers’ story increased my respect and admiration of him. However, the book needed tighter editing. The unnecessary repetition of established details was numbing & tedious. While I have loved Levar Burton’s work for years, I found his ‘astonished’ inflection for every. single. incident. annoying. I recommend finding a different account of Mr. Rogers’ life.

I had to agree with other reviewers that the overuse of cliches and soppy prose had me frequently rolling my eyes and skipping forward at times just to get to the end of one marriage and on to the next. Some marriage ploys were obvious, some not as much, but much of the plot was pretty predictable as soon as a character was introduced. There was enough tease to solve the mysteries of Evelyn's multiple marriages and choice of unknown biographer (the biggest mystery) that I finished the book, but a predominantly LGBTQ love story is not really my cup of tea. I know, that's on me as I read the book based on enthusiastic reviews from friends and family, completely missing the fact that it's in the LGBTQ+ romance category when I bought the book.

Too "woowoo" for me

The author warns at the onset that some of his recommendations would seem too "woowoo" for some listeners, and I really tried to keep an open mind. I finally gave up on the book and am trying to initiate a return. As a healthcare professional, I appreciated the science, supported by studies, on the impact our daily activities, posture, exercise, and affect have on our health, along with exercises to realign our bodies. I was done when he started down the path of irradiating your gonads with your phone and the dangerous radiation levels in airports (this after several other questionable or expensive recommendations, such as wearing only organic, naturally-dyed clothing to avoid absorbing dangerous chemicals--who is going to completely revamp their wardrobe based on his book?). Maybe his PDF has meta-analyses of studies supporting these allegations, but I'm not interested in digging further to find out.

After enjoying Terminus, I discovered that I had missed (what I thought was) the third book in the series. I purchased it without reading the reviews; bad idea! I was expecting alternate universes and green cockroaches, maybe even a Veke sighting. Guess I'll never know since I just returned the book after a couple of hours into it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to zombie tales (WD fan), but I don't typically choose zombie books. As another listener noted, even Ray Porter's usually fun narration fell flat and felt forced. Don't waste your credit or time on this one.

This beautiful and haunting tale is superbly narrated, with Ms. Sands' and Mr. Di Loreto's rich voices bringing the characters to life perfectly. Hearing part of the story set against the Spanish Flu, with its impact on the central family and their community, felt so immediate given our current climate. This is truly a must-read/listen book!

Annoying "suspenseful" music and shrill ringing phones unfortunately distracted from a fun and informative book. While it is nice to know the backstory of my food sources, I can do without the guilt trip of stripping resources and paying workers low wages in order to bring almond flour to my pantry.

What did you love best about The Snow Child?

The emotions and character interactions were as vivid and delicate as a snowflake.

What other book might you compare The Snow Child to and why?

Much of the book had a grown-up Hans Christian Anderson fairytale quality.

Any additional comments?

The author and narrator made believing in a snow maiden-come-to-life so easy and natural that I found myself as skeptical as the characters until Jack's encounter with the girl and her father high in the mountains. I smiled and cried from beginning to end, then cried again when it ended. What a beautiful story!

If you could sum up 14 in three words, what would they be?

Sci-fi light.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Veke; smart, dry sense of humor.

Which scene was your favorite?

Finding the control room.

Any additional comments?

I don't consider myself to be a huge sci-fi fan, but I enjoyed the references to fictional characters like Walter Bishop; I felt like I was 'in on the joke.' This was a perfect blend of balancing the everyday drudgery that make up life (traffic, paying bills, sometimes a pointless job--we've all been there!) with the excitement of a good mystery that has the characters (and reader) rushing home to explore. Ray Porter has once again done a fantastic job of vocal characterization to bring the story to life.
