Historia
In this intimate, beautifully crafted collection, Driver writes and narrates with disarming charm and candor about her bohemian upbringing between England and Barbados; her post-university travails and triumphs—from being the only student in her acting school not taken on by an agent to being discovered at a rave in a muddy field in the English countryside; shooting to fame in one of the most influential films of the 1990s and being nominated for an Academy Award; and finding the true light of her life, her son.

Historia
Haunted by an unmet promise, the Swart family loses touch after the death of their matriarch. Adrift, the lives of the three siblings move separately through the uncharted waters of South Africa; Anton, the golden boy who bitterly resents his life’s unfulfilled potential; Astrid, whose beauty is her power; and the youngest, Amor, whose life is shaped by a nebulous feeling of guilt.

Absolutely outstanding
Revisado: 05-20-23
I was riveted from the first moment, so appreciative of Peter Noble’s narration, which i find excellent. Evocative of my past life left behind when I emigrated from South Africa, the accents and voices of each character are superb. And I don’t usually like narrators to voice different characters.
And of course the writing by Damon Galgut is deserving of any award he may get, and more. Every sentence so beautiful, every image so relatable and visible. Thank you.

Johannesburg, Easter weekend, 1993. Nelson Mandela had been released after twenty-seven years in prison and was in power sharing talks with President F.W. de Klerk. After decades of resistance, the apartheid regime seemed poised to fall…until a white supremacist shot and killed Mandela’s popular heir apparent, Chris Hani, in a last desperate attempt to provoke civil war.

Outstanding
Revisado: 05-15-23
As a white South African who lived through this time, this filled in so many gaps of what I knew at the time. It is desperately sad that it takes the loss of so many lives to force change; change that is purely to recognize the humanity of each individual. Ubuntu. Where has it gone?
Thank you, Mr. Malala, for this excellent reconstruction of the most pivotal time in modern day life. I wish the current world forces would take more notice.

Historia
Rob Delaney is a comedy superstar. But if you’re ever watched him steal scenes as Peter in Deadpool 2, binged his streaming series Catastrophe, encountered his raunchy and mischievous Twitter presence, or witnessed the hilarious and painful sharing he does in his stand-up, you already know that. In his first book, he traces his journey from middle-class theater geek to public menace to devoted family man and passionately engaged model citizen.

Historia
In this extraordinary book, Sarah Polley explores what it is to live in one’s body, in a constant state of becoming, learning, and changing. Each of these six essays captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person she is now but was not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”
