Action, lust and bears
Revisado: 11-09-24
Again, lovers that fear loving as much as the monsters around them. This should not work as well as it does. Strong characters and an excellent reader make it work.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Hilarious and over the top
Revisado: 10-20-24
This is what make Scalzi the funniest SF writer alive. Space Opera on the ground (and under ground and underwater), with humor that if it does not make you smile, your soul is dead.

Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Everything except the kitchen sink
Revisado: 10-20-24
There is a rule in science fiction, that you can only ask the reader to suspend disbelief one time per story. This book violates this repeatedly, in small and big ways. As you are reeling from one thing, it throws another one at you. Only the characters keep you engaged, and make this story engaging. The ending tries to resolve things but is left with so much to do it leans towards deus ex machina.

No way I should have enjoyed this book…but I did
Revisado: 08-29-24
After picking up another book by Kingfisher without knowing it was a genre I normally avoid, then liking it, I picked this up, again finding it was a subgenre I avoid even more! But again very real characters and bright sparkles of humor kept me reading. Even scenes that made me cringe (my skin crawls when people are falsely accused of something, sadly no one includes trigger warnings for that) I endured for the rewarding wry absurdity and wit. Recommended, particularly if you think you know enough about the book to believe you won’t like it.

Historia
Allan Carpentier escaped from hell once but remained haunted by what he saw and endured. He has now returned, on a mission to liberate those souls unfairly tortured and confined. Partnering with the famous poet and suicide, Sylvia Plath, Carpentier is a modern-day Christ who intends to harrow hell and free the damned. But now that he's returned to this Dantesque inferno, can he ever again leave?

Interesting but not quite the original
Revisado: 08-17-24
I read Inferno almost 50 years ago and it led me to read Dante (Inferno was more accessible) I only recently learned that they had written this sequel. So comparing two books one read in youth and another in retirement is perilous, but here goes. This is more theological or at least philosophical and less adventurous. Much is predictable. Pournelle is suspect had some axes to grind, though proven stopped him from going overboard. Still, it kept my interest, even to the end, which I found less satisfying than expected. I am still glad to have found it.

Historia
The Krakau came to Earth to invite humanity into a growing alliance of sentient species. However, they happened to arrive after a mutated plague wiped out half the planet, turned the rest into shambling, near-unstoppable animals, and basically destroyed human civilization. You know - your standard apocalypse. The Krakau's first impulse was to turn around and go home. Their second impulse was to try to fix us. Now, a century later, human beings might not be what they once were, but at least they're no longer trying to eat everyone. Mostly.

Good story, if not a little predictable. Antagonists were only too happy to explain the situation once the protagonist’s cornered them.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Most historians study the smallest slivers of time, emphasizing specific dates, individuals, and documents. But what would it look like to study the whole of history, from the big bang through the present day - and even into the remote future? How would looking at the full span of time change the way we perceive the universe, the earth, and our very existence? These were the questions David Christian set out to answer when he created the field of "Big History", the most exciting new approach to understanding where we have been, where we are, and where we are going.

Too much material to cover well

Inevitable I suppose. Still, I hoped for certain segments to slow down a bit. His model of energy flows was interesting and helped reframe a lot, but it never fully engaged some of the more interesting periods.
