Historia
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

This is what I wanted, and I got it!
Revisado: 05-18-20
Reading through these reviews, they accurately & uniformly praise the narrator, correctly. He did an amazing job with this book. But to these pearl clutching pansies saying it is a re-tread (to what?) or too gross (grosser than what - because I want to read that book too!): what were you looking for, Tulip? To these body horror experts saying it is too much: what was too much and what exactly did you expect? Did you expect him to NOT to write what he wanted us to envision? And to instead *infer* the horrors Lucas saw? Or to merely gesture toward the stuff down there & paraphrase Westlake’s journal? Jesus Christmas.
This is a bada** book with extremely immersive and terrifying images. Told in an authoritative & storytelling tone that I absolutely loved and appreciated. This is one of the best horror stories of the last decade and probably longer. He weaves a very deep tale here and gives us so much exposition while freaking us out along the way. I’d put this up there with the best horror audiobooks I’ve experienced recently. So good. So so good and frightening and scientific and ‘yucky’ at times but so incredibly worth it. The payoffs are everywhere, in Westlake’s journal alone but in addition to that, we get the full backstory on Lucas’s Mom.
After the success of Underwater I can just about guarantee that this has been optioned for a movie adaptation, as it should be. It’s written to be put on a big screen and I hope it gets the big budget treatment it deserves. Absolutely excellent and scary audiobook and I loved it. I know my audiobook freak-fests and this is one I tell everybody about. Absolutely awesome listening experience, every drippy creepy pressurized moment of it.

Undersea Warrior: a submarine designed to pursue and attack enemy submarines and surface ships using torpedoes. This will follow the careers of four daring British submarine captains who risked their lives to keep the rest of us safe, their exploits consigned to the shadows until now. Their experiences encompass the span of the Cold War, from voyages in WW2-era submarines under Arctic ice to nuclear-powered espionage missions in Soviet-dominated seas. This is the dramatic untold story of Britain’s most-secret service.

One of the better books about submarine operations during the Cold War
Revisado: 01-25-20
A fantastic look at the Royal Navy and what they were doing lurking around and PROTECTING US during the Cold War. The Royal Navy's submariners are some of the most bold and daring sub drivers on the planet. Ballantyne's ability to explain some of the more technical aspects of submarine operations & systems in incredible. I never felt overwhelmed and just wanted it to keep going. I loved the stories about underhull/underwater looks and the detail about ships trying to foul each others towed array cables. This is one of the better Cold War submarine books I've listened to and I loved hearing the amazing stories. The audiobook is fantastically narrated by a guy that can subtly & effectively do a Royal Navy sub commander, a US sub jockey, a fictional Russian submarine defector - and switch between them with ease and in a very subtle way, and this type of quoting is rare. I have already listened to this one a few times and just finished it again. This was just a amazing audiobook experience from and by a real Cold Warrior soldier. An all around A+ from me.

Historia
Sometime in 1965, James Hawes landed in the Congo with cash stuffed in his socks, morphine in his bag, and a basic understanding of his mission: recruit a mercenary navy and suppress the Soviet- and Chinese-backed rebels engaged in guerilla movements against a pro-Western government. He knew the United States must preserve deniability, so he would be abandoned in any life-threatening situation; he did not know that Che Guevara was attempting to export his revolution a few miles away. Cold War Navy SEAL gives unprecedented insight into a clandestine chapter in US history through the experiences of Hawes, a distinguished Navy frogman and later a CIA contractor. His journey began as an officer in the newly-formed SEAL Team 2, where Hawes commanded boats in the CIA's series of covert, hit-and-run raids into North Vietnam. Those raids directly instigated the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.

I can’t explain how much I loved this book. This book quite daringly cross references recently declassified documents with a certain rebel leader’s own diary/log and makes the Navy & CIA operations in the Congo really come to life. This was an incredible look at a tough-as-nails Navy Seal team and equally tough partners. Such an amazing story that I restarted the book as soon as the Epilogue ended. Thank You Mr. Hawes, Ms. Koening and Mr. Campbell. This is an A+ audiobook in every possible way.

Historia
In autumn 2016, the CIA sent to its website a cache of electronic files previously released under the Freedom of Information Act but housed at the National Archives. Among a variety of subjects were "unidentified flying objects." Finally, a stockpile of reports and correspondences were available for serious UFO researchers to examine at home. This book consists of selections from those secret files.

A really strong new entry in the UFO book realm. I liked the structure of this, the ways in which big stories and small were treated fairly and the level of detail provided for each report. Many of the best known cases are described but the book puts cases in larger context. Since it is told chronologically the reader gets a sense of what years and locations were busy, and why. Strong performance by the narrator too, making this a very good addition to anybody’s UFO/UAP nonfiction collection. Strongly recommended.

Revisado: 07-15-19
Oriana Small aka Ashley Blue did a great job writing and reading her work for us. I really enjoyed this and appreciate the frank, direct way she tells her stories. I have always found the adult industry interesting and I'm sure I'd work in the field if I lived in that area. I really enjoyed the pacing, the thoroughness of Oriana Small's stories and the intelligent way this woman's life is portrayed. She's amazing, this book was amazing. I loved it and recommend it highly to people who like learning about the behind-the-scenes aspect of the adult film industry. I hope she continues to write because she is clearly great at it.

Amazingly told & woven story about this problem
Revisado: 05-18-19
I started with The Last Days of August and was so moved that I immediately bought this as a follow-up. these long form, well-researched pieces are so missing in the adult entertainment community. Ronson and Lena should be so proud of their work. I cried at the end, I'll admit it. You guys got me - this was so good. After all that lead up I didn't know where it would end, but it was amazing. Thank you for taking an unflinching, expository, helpful, even pragmatic look at this issue of repurposed content. It is bound to happen to any industry if we don't figure out what the root causes are.

Historia
In December 2017 the famous porn star August Ames committed suicide in a park in the Conejo Valley. It happened a day after she’d been the victim of a pile-on, via Twitter, by fellow porn professionals - punishment for her tweeting something deemed homophobic. A month later, August’s husband, Kevin, connected with Jon Ronson to tell the story of how Twitter bullying killed his wife. What neither Kevin nor Ronson realized was that Ronson would soon hear rumors and secrets hinting at a very different story - something mysterious and unexpected and terrible.

Completely amazing look at August's life + death
Revisado: 05-16-19
I have always been interested in the inner workings of the porn industry. I'm not a particularly avid consumer of porn although I do watch it sometimes. I am borderline obsessed with the industry though. This was so professionally done and well-researched and a real credit to the producers and writers. It made me cry twice as a grown man who never knew August Ames and barely knows her work. I love how honestly and unflinchingly they approach this, like adults, treating porn and in the adult entertainment industry in a respectful manner. Finally. Finally. maybe that's one good thing that has come from losing such a beautiful and amazing talented woman... that we can approach the adult industry like adults and talk about it this way. So good. the writers researchers and producers should be so proud. THANK YOU if any of you people see this review.

I burned through this in a weekend and I'm going to start it over now. I can't believe how much I learned about intelligence-gathering, covert operations and many other things. I'm already a cold war armchair historian having read something like 15 other books. I place this at the top of my personal audible list. This lecturer was amazing too, it wasn't just the material - both were absolutely top-notch. he did an amazing job and is a very engaging lecturer. Thank you!!!

The story of the NR-1 is told against the tense background of the Cold War and peopled with such rich characters as the acerbic Admiral Hyman Rickover, ocean scientist Robert Ballard (who found the Titanic), the designers and builders who faced almost impossible tasks to give life to the ship, the unique officers and sailors who took the little boat down into depths on covert missions, and the families who waited for them on shore, unaware that there would be no escape if the boat ran into trouble.

Revisado: 12-27-18
This is a book that I've already restarted twice and I'm on my third run-through. I don't really want to spoil it too much but this was an amazing account of the NR-1, Admiral Rickover's brilliant tactics and bureaucratic supremacy (and arrogance and tendency to be a mean bully!). I couldn't get enough of the tales of sneaking around in the Mediterranean, observing objects of interest on the sea floor and running salvage missions from the depths. Amazing narrator too, who did an amazing job expressing the intent of the authors. Thank you lee Vyborny, Don Davis and Braden Wright for this awesome partnership. Thanks for your Naval service and professionalism in putting this book + audio book together. I freaking loved this one. I've read all of then, Red November., Blind Man's Bluff, Scorpion Down, and probably 10 others in this non-fiction space. This is a stand out. So good.

We have a criminal & traitor in OUR White House
Revisado: 04-09-18
This book simply laid out the facts, the things Mueller has to examine and I just hope and pray that he does his work quickly. So that we can excise this cancer, this "Trump" from our democracy as quickly as possible.
Everything they need to know is in these pages.
The book is as neutral as it gets. I found myself enraged at parts of the narrative. This is so obviously going to end with impeachment and even prison terms. Every time I see him write some screed on Twitter or call honest journalism "fake news" in his little sneering way, with Pence lovingly staring at the back of his neatly folded hair I just want to scream. This whole thing is disgusting.
Read this AFTER Fire and Fury. This calmed me down a bit due to its neutrality but the investigation must take this VERY public information seriously. I don't and won't ever consider him an American President. He is a wing of Putin's kleptocracy and dictatorship and everyone knows it. He knows it and it is so obvious every single day in his actions.
Let's stop the nonsense bickering, read books like this, get informed, get upset, and prod every Congressman or Senator you can to get him OUT. As quickly as possible.
