Historia
"The Great War", as it was known at the time, was also said to be the "war to end all wars." It seized all of Europe and much of the rest of the world in its grip of death and destruction. The first truly modern war, it changed how war and peace would be conducted throughout the remainder of the 20th century and even to the present.

This was a good overview course. Well organized and presented. The questions format is a bit stilted, in my humble opinion.

Historia
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

Outstanding! Must read book!
Revisado: 02-15-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Command and Control to be better than the print version?
No. It is just the version that I had time to "read".
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
This is a really well written and compelling story about one of the most important, but under-appreciated issues of our time. By setting the whole story against the back drop of the Damascus Accident, Schlosser turns the story of command and control of nuclear weapons into a real page turner! I've spent most of my life involved in one way or another with these issues, and I believe that Schlosser nails it, and points to the flaws that persist to this day, and threaten our very existence. Highly recommended.

Historia
Here is the first full-length biography of a much maligned but astonishingly colourful Queen of England. In Newgate Street, in the city of London, stand the meagre ruins of Christ Church. On the same site once stood a royal mausoleum set to rival Westminster Abbey in the 14th century. Among the many crowned heads buried there was Isabella of France, Edward II's queen - one of the most notorious femme fatales in history. But how did she acquire her evil reputation? And is it justified?

Fascinating piece of history!
Revisado: 09-29-13
Any additional comments?
This is a very good book, and is read brilliantly by Ms Lecat. I was hoping for a book as good as Katherine, and this one didn't quite make that mark, primarily because Ms Weir spent a bit too much time on some of the more mundane descriptions than I felt was warranted. Nonetheless, she certainly wrote a compelling book that provides ample argument for revisiting the harsh historical judgment so often associated with Isabella. Enjoy diving into this stormy period of English history!

The action peaks with the storming of the Bastille, the dreaded symbol of government authority. And the blade of La Guillotine falls again...

Historia
A compelling novel of desire, secrecy, and sexual identity, In One Person is a story of unfulfilled love—tormented, funny, and affecting—and an impassioned embrace of our sexual differences. Billy, the bisexual narrator and main character of In One Person, tells the tragicomic story (lasting more than half a century) of his life as a “sexual suspect,” a phrase first used by John Irving in 1978 in his landmark novel of “terminal cases,” The World According to Garp.

Revisado: 09-03-12
What did you like best about this story?
This is a tremendously well presented argument for a truly fundamental reset in American Policy. As a retired USAF officer who spent a tour in Turkey, and worked with Iranians before the Ayatollah, I absolutely agree with recommendations. American's have so very much more in common with the Persians and the Turks -- so much more to gain, so much more moral standing to be had -- with this "Reset." I hope the senior policy thinkers, movers and shakers all read this book, and go get to know the Turks and Persians. The world will be a better place for it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Historia
Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.
