Historia
The Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork is facing a crisis, and who better to manage it than the man who turned around Ankh-Morpork’s inefficient Post Office, former arch-swindler-turned-Postmaster General Moist von Lipwig. Lord Vetinari once again makes Moist an offer he can’t refuse: resuscitate the venerable Royal Mint. The bank has many problems: the chief cashier is almost certainly a vampire, the elderly chairman and her two loaded crossbows needs a daily walkie, there’s something strange happening in the cellar, and running the Royal Mint is costing a mint.

I have heard that Terry Pratchett had many other books he wanted to write. He is a brilliant at shining a light on what we take for granted while illuminating the absurdity of it all. I would love to have all of those conceived books that never reached us.
The tyrant, the gold-based money system without any gold - Terry would have been a staunch advocate for Bitcoin, I am certain. May we see another like him some day.

Engaging and sweet
Revisado: 03-04-24
This book is well-written, which cannot be said for all romance books, I’m sad to say. There were no faux-pas or awkward word choices to distract from the story. Graceful and competent storytelling throughout.
The characters are engaging and endearing, or else frustratingly narcissistic. You love the protagonists and despise the villains, as you should.
I especially loved the length of the story. It had several turns and surprises and it kept my heart warm for hours.
Great story for when you want some comfort and coziness.

Marra never wanted to be a hero. As the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter, she escaped the traditional fate of princesses, to be married away for the sake of an uncaring throne. Seeking help for her rescue mission, Marra is offered the tools she needs, but only if she can complete three seemingly impossible tasks:

Historia
Transported from the mid-twentieth century to New York City in the year 1882, Si Morley walks the fashionable "Ladies' Mile" of Broadway, is enchanted by the jingling sleigh bells in Central Park, and solves a 20th-century mystery by discovering its 19th-century roots. Falling in love with a beautiful young woman, he ultimately finds himself forced to choose between his lives in the present and the past. A story that will remain in the listener's memory, Time and Again is a remarkable blending of the troubled present and a nostalgic past....

In its time, a wonderful story
Revisado: 01-09-23
I loved the book but had to endure much shrinking from the implicit assumptions about women throughout the first person narrative. It needs updating - any woman under 25 is a “girl”, and the hero expects praise for thinking women have just as good moral character as any man. My eye rolling and shudders aside, it’s well-crafted and nicely worded, with a rich and picturesque ambiance.
The narrator downplays all excitement, which I found jarring several times, but he’s easy to listen to in general - consistent volume and tone, no squeaky female voice imitations.
Overall I am glad I read it. It’s nice to find something that’s not competing with high impact action movies, but had elements of nostalgia and reflection along with the compelling story line.

Historia
When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people - who knew?). Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans! Again!

I love Martha Wells' writing in this series. This novella in particular reminds me a lot of Lois McMaster Bujold's novel Diplomatic Immunity, which is high praise indeed. i can't wait for more Murderbot!

Historia
Savid DelaCrotia is the third born son of one of the Kingdom of Montshire’s oldest and most respected High families. Cast aside by his father at an early age, it’s up to him to make his own way and create his own honor. With just his horse, his weapons, the clothes on his back and in his pack, and the education that his family provided, he’ll have to go it alone. Luckily, he already has a pretty good idea of what he’s good at - fighting, and woodcraft - not to mention finding hidden and lost items.

Good story, strange use of cliches
Revisado: 10-25-20
This felt like an excellent story written by an inexperienced writer. An example is using the expression “they performed their ablutions” - no one uses this anymore. Unsophisticated sexual jokes, incorrect use of words, and awkward character development made the listening painful. The narrator sounded too serious for such a light story.
In spite of all that, I listened all the way to the end because the story was good and I wanted to find out what happened. The ending was a lead in to the next book, but I won’t buy the sequel unless it gets a new edition.
A thorough edit and a more playful reading would make this actually good.

Not to my taste
Revisado: 09-11-09
This sounded good from the reviews, but it failed to capture my attention. The story is long and involved and the characters go through so much life... I was looking for a more immediate experience or a slice of life. For example, the main character has a baby but the having of it is omitted from the story. She's pregnant, and then the next chapter she just happens to have a little girl named Annie. It's like small talk at a party - all the significant stuff is left out. It is probably a wonderful saga for those who enjoy this style. I am not a good judge of the genre, especially since I didn't finish it.

Delightful
Revisado: 03-30-08
The first part of the book was painful to listen to. So little goes right! I felt hopeless about Ivan's chances in his new world, and hopeless about his chances of getting out of it.
But I picked it up because of the author, and he didn't disappoint me. Part 2 had me engaged in the growing relationships between the characters, and in Part 3 I was enthralled. Just like Ivan, I started out an awkward foreigner in this story and became a comfortable belonging member.
Card manages to make even his villain a complex, admirable character, so in spite of wishing her dead, I enjoyed the sections from her point of view. The good people have flaws, and the bad people have redeeming qualities.
This is a multi-dimensional story woven together with history, human nature, and well-managed surprises. Card's writing is skillful and free of awkward bits. The violence is understated and carries a punch but rarely overwhelms. All in all, a beautifully written story from a very good storyteller.
