Historia
In 1990, while covering a story about homelessness for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Ted Jackson encountered a drug addict sleeping under a bridge. After snapping a photo, Jackson woke the man. Pointing to the daily newspaper by his feet, the homeless stranger looked the photojournalist in the eye and said, “You ought to do a story about me.” When Ted asked why, he was stunned by the answer. “Because, I’ve played in three Super Bowls.”

Great story, terrible narration
Revisado: 02-23-21
I felt like the story was being read to me by my GPS app... Other than that, it was a very moving piece on addiction and mental health.

Historia
With a career, a boyfriend, and a loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the reckless young woman who delivered a suitcase of drug money 10 years before. But that past has caught up with her. Convicted and sentenced to 15 months at the infamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, the well-heeled Smith College alumna is now inmate #11187-424 - one of the millions of people who disappear “down the rabbit hole” of the American penal system.

Good book about redemption
Revisado: 09-18-19
I enjoyed the book and was happy it was nothing like the sensationalized TV show. The narrator was a bit annoying, though. She did a good job doing all of the accents, but when she’s speaking as Piper, she sounds like she’s having tea with a WASPy grandmother with her pinkie pointed out... even while swearing and retelling women peeing on the floor.

Historia
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.

I’ve never met a PhD who was so naive.
Revisado: 12-02-18
I’m not sure if it was the writing or the narration, but Rachel’s character annoyed me throughout. She appeared more like a mid-20s something who works in retail sales at the mall than someone with a PhD in economics. Also, the narration did not match the writing. Chinese characters were portrayed as having Janis-from-Friends type mannerisms (minus the laugh, thankfully), but then lines which ended with “she shrieked” were narrated in a flatter tone. Cute story, all in all, and definitely better than the movie.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

One of the most important books of this generation!
Revisado: 05-29-18
I hope this becomes required reading for high school literature. Very powerful and moving. Turpin does an amazing job narrating as well!

Historia
Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

Bad narration
Revisado: 04-12-18
The narrator would say questions as statements and gave Hermione weird inflections. Distracting and annoying.
