Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Wonderful
Revisado: 10-05-07
Incredibly well thought out and written story with exactly the right amount of characterisation and emotion to maintain the focus of the story. Although set in a science fiction environment, this story is about people and their actions in the widest possible context and will be enjoyed by anyone who likes a good story.
This (and the others in the Ender series) is one of the best read (and in parts acted) audible books I've enjoyed.

Historia
Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in the sun and prevent much air from escaping. Larry Niven's novel, Ringworld, is the winner of the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 1972 Ditmars, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction.

This would have made a good and entertaining short story and possibly an OK teen horror movie but as a full novel it doesn't work. Rather than endearing you to any of the characters, the overly extensive characterisation just serves to bog down the story. Even ignoring the extent to which you are asked to suspend disbelief regarding the main events and activities I found myself not caring what happened to any of the characters but, rather, I found myself just grinding to the end of the story to finish it - vaguely hoping that some sort of explanation would be forthcoming.

Historia
Before she went to join Sam and Mogget downstairs, Lirael paused for a moment to look at herself in the tall silver mirror that hung on the wall of her room. The image that faced her bore little resemblance to the Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr. She saw a warlike and grim young woman, dark hair bound back with a silver cord rather than hanging free to disguise her face. She no longer wore her librarian's waistcoat, and she had a long Nehima at her side rather than a library-issue dagger.

Historia
"I am Eva Delectorskaya," Sally Gilmartin announces, and so on a warm summer afternoon in 1976 her daughter, Ruth, learns that everything she ever knew about her mother was a carefully constructed lie. Sally Gilmartin is a respectable English widow living in picturesque Cotswold village; Eva Delectorskaya was a rigorously trained World War II spy, a woman who carried fake passports and retreated to secret safe houses, a woman taught to lie and deceive, and above all, to never trust anyone. Three decades later the secrets of Sally's past still haunt her.

Intricate and compelling
Revisado: 10-05-07
I continue to be amazed how William Boyd is able to write books that seem almost autobiographical from the point of view of their main protagonists when each one is so completely different from the others. I've not seen a repeated theme in any of his books and each one is an independent masterpiece of fictional history and thoroughly involving stories.
Restless continues this pattern but with the twist of running two concurrent, related but historically separated personal stories. A hugely enjoyable, clever and entertaining book read superbly with emotion and attention to the flow of the author's prose.
If you like good stories then choose this one.

Historia
Former naval doctor Peter Crane is summoned to a remote oil platform in the North Atlantic to help diagnose a bizarre medical condition. But when he arrives, Crane learns that the real trouble lies far below on "Deep Storm", a stunningly advanced science-research facility built two miles beneath the surface on the ocean floor. The top-secret structure has been designed for one purpose: to excavate a recently discovered undersea site that may hold the answers to an ancient mystery.

Formulaic but entertaining
Revisado: 10-05-07
This book is a fun and entertaining adventure story based on the best traditions of hero, nemesis, love interest and dodgy, unexplained science. It's a good listen and adequately presented but clearly follows the adventure-mystery template adhered to by the likes of Dan Brown to structure the story rather than ploughing its own furrow the way authors like Steven King and William Gibson seem to succeed in.

Excellent
Revisado: 10-05-07
I was dubious of this story from the summary but the fact that it is narrated by Steven King himself caused me to take a punt. I am glad I did as this book, in my opinion, is possibly the best book Steven King has written. Confusing and strange at first but immensely compelling and delightfully involving. Although Steven King doesn't have the voice presence of some of the more popular reading artists, the fact that it is his own work he is reading adds to the overall effect and makes this one of the most enjoyable audible books and stories I have listened to.
