Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Slow story about a house
Revisado: 04-16-25
It took half the book to set up the interesting story about the people.
A house, even a magnificent house like this one, cannot carry a novel.
BORING. I only stayed with it to see if anything interesting happened. Some things were interesting. And also because Tom Hanks (or his brother?) did the reading.

Historia
Frederick Fife was born with an extra helping of kindness in his heart. If he borrowed your car, he’d return it washed with a full tank of gas. The problem is there’s nobody left in Fred’s life to borrow from. At eighty-two, he’s desperately lonely, broke, and on the brink of homelessness. But Fred’s luck changes when, in a bizarre case of mistaken identity, he takes the place of grumpy Bernard Greer at the local nursing home. Now he has warm meals in his belly and a roof over his head—as long as his poker face is in better shape than his prostate and that his look-alike never turns up.

A long angry path to redemption
Revisado: 01-27-25
It was hard to live with so many sad, angry characters for the majority of the book. I’m glad I stuck it out though as the ending is very sweet.
Interesting how several characters went through a change. Fred was a traveling angel who helped them find forgiveness and grace.
Can’t read it again though. I don’t want to live with that many sad lives for the majority of the book as they repeated their angry mantras again and again.
The author’s thank you credits after the epilogue was very tender. I hope she’s working on another novel.
Sorry to not love this clever story.

Historia
Kate Reddy had it all: a nice home, two adorable kids, a good husband. Then her kids became teenagers (read: monsters). She's facing her 50th birthday; her mother and in-laws are in precarious health; and her husband is having a midlife crisis that leaves her desperate to restart her career after years away from the workplace. Kate is scrambling to keep all the balls in the air in a juggling act that an early review from the UK Express hailed as "sparkling, funny, and poignant...a triumphant return for Pearson."

Weak woman’s journey back into work life
Revisado: 12-05-24
Not uplifting to say the least. Not insightful unless you’re a man disconnected from a woman or under 30. Then if you are, you definitely don’t want to listen to this tragedy.

Dragged out the story. Good ending though
Revisado: 10-25-24
Cleaver concept but it took too long to get to the point. Each scene drug on for far too long. In skipped forward many times especially during the first half.

Historia
Lark Smith has always had a plan for her life: find a fantastic guy, create a marriage as blissful as her parents’, pop out a couple of kids, and build a rewarding career as an oncologist. Things aren’t going so well. For one, the guy didn’t work out. Theoretically, she’d love to find someone else, but it hasn’t happened. Two, she’s just been transferred out of Oncology for being too emotional. (Is it her fault she’s a weeper?) Three, her parents just split up. Deviating from the plan was … well, not in the plan. A potential solution comes from the foul-tempered surgeon Lorenzo Santini.

Simple story. Over described. Nicely characters.
Revisado: 10-08-24
I had to fast forward 10% of the book. Anything listed as 80% too long.
It’s an OK story. That’s a compliment if you’re the author because most people can’t write. So this being OK is good.

Historia
Wally Roux is a teenage genius with a big imagination and a big heart, who just moved to Savannah, GA, from Maine with his mom, who adopted him when he was an infant. In this charming and sweet solo performance, Wally investigates what is causing a number of strange events and occurrences. He explores and gets lost within space-time - an infinite, indefinable, and mysterious void that you can’t see but when you slice into it you can feel it.

Historia
Through regressive hypnosis, a lost legend of the history of mankind has been retrieved from the recesses of time. Did the American Indians descend from the inhabitants of an alien spacecraft that crashed in the Alaska-Canada region thousands of years ago? Keepers of the Garden told the story of the original seeding of the planet Earth by aliens from outer space. Starcrash indicates that aliens continue to come to Earth, some intentionally and some by accident, throughout our history.

Revisado: 03-21-24
I loved how Dolores can walk a hypnotized person through a life. She extracted so many details it became a rich tale. I am listening to it a second time right away, that’s how much I enjoyed it. I can’t say much because unrolling this mystery life is part of the reader/listener’s journey.

Interwoven character life paths
Revisado: 01-28-24
I liked how the various characters life stories pulled together. I did wonder about the odds of the supporting character, Sally, had a connection to the war (the industrial war complex big money some that drove the entire story). Her severe alcoholism was a stretch if you’ve ever known a drunk at the shaky hands level, but it didn’t drag on too long.
Overall the story was engaging, but a bit gruesome. If you like bloody gun and knife violence, you’ll get an extra kick out of this mystery story.

Historia
Elsewhere is where 15-year-old Liz Hall ends up, after she has died. It is a place so like Earth, yet completely different. Here Liz will age backward from the day of her death until she becomes a baby again and returns to Earth. But Liz wants to turn 16, not 14 again. She wants to get her driver's license. She wants to graduate from high school and go to college. And now that she's dead, Liz is being forced to live a life she doesn't want.

Weak concept, maybe OK for 12 yr olds
Revisado: 01-21-24
This story is based on a magical concept of the afterlife in Elsewhere. At first it's cute, but the story is drawn out and the main character, Liz, is not likable as she is primarily a pouty, anger teenager.

Simple & slow but kind of charming
Revisado: 04-15-23
This story is about a stalwart elderly woman whose way of being results in a sad, empty life. This story interleaves her sad memories with her last year, when she finally speaks her mind and tries a few novel things, both of which give her laughter and friendship.
Moral of the story is simply being kind to others won’t guarantee happiness. The baby Buddha, Rose, lives the true path to happiness.
