Historia
Two men, each unaware of the other, share a common family secret: They were sold for adoption by their American father shortly after their births in the Philippines. Three alternating stories interweave the experiences of father Andrew Breszky and the two sons who try to connect and piece together the puzzle of their reckless, impulsive father. One lives in New York and the other grows up in the south of France, later traveling all over Asia as a documentary filmmaker. Both will discover that their relationships somehow echo that of the young man whose history eludes them.

Revisado: 03-04-24
Immersed in a labyrinth of haunting beauty and grotesque elegance, this mesmerizing tale unfolds like poetry in the darkest of nights. Each word a haunting melody, each page a dance with mystery.

Historia
The powerful debut novel from Alan Brennert, Moloka’i tells the story of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy and is quarantined on the island of Moloka’i during the 1890s. Separated from her family and forced to grow up in the leper colony of Kalaupapa, Rachel experiences intense isolation. But she remains strong, finding moments of joy, and even love. Rich in Hawaiian history, this novel proves itself a stellar piece of historical fiction.

A great historical novel
Revisado: 10-21-23
I read Honolulu and I liked it, but this one tugged at my heartstrings. As a mom, I was triggered when Rachel was forced to move at 7 years old
and be without her family. Rachel was such a resilient character and loved her so much. Such a great book..

Is it possible to be grounded and have a rich interior life? Is it possible to get through the day with poise when everything hits the fan? Is it possible to have a spiritual life and not be a wing nut? For Jen Weigel, the answer to all three questions is a resounding yes.

I love it when an author can narrate their own book and it and you can hear their passion for their work in their voice.
It was such a good book!

Historia
A year and a half into our marriage, I found out my husband had been having an affair with a 19-year-old for six months. I filed for divorce and left. Two weeks later I met a man, and we fell madly in love. It was a fairy-tale romance for a month and a half, and he convinced me to join him on a romantic month-long vacation in Italy. Forty-eight hours before we were supposed to get on a plane, he told me he needed to go by himself. I was devastated. So, I had a decision to make. Either stay home and be heartbroken, or go travel Europe for a month by myself.

2 out of 5 stars
I wanted to like it more but I just couldn’t. Gabrielle comes off as an entitled, man crazy, self absorbed, immature and annoying person. After a bit, I immediately went to some of the reviews and there are so many harsh reviews about this book. But the more I got into it, I realized why I didn’t like her: HER VIEWS ON LOVE IS EXACTLY HOW I SAW IT WHEN I WAS HER AGE (except for sleeping around with a new man in every European country she went to). It’s easy to judge someone who is so fixated on a romantic relationship but when you have inner conflict and issues…it’s easy to see why she is the way she is.
I felt that every single chapter, she came off as the victim of her situation and I found myself repeating in my head, “It’s your fault. You made those choices. You made assumptions about Javier. You are prioritizing this man and finding the perfect man over loving yourself.” It was all of that…that hit a nerve. But I get it. I did all that s#i! at her age and in my thirties. I get it when your ideals center around being loved by someone else vs loving yourself.
Do I recommend this book?! Hell yes. Because at least 75% of people I know who have relationship issues really think the way she does. The only thing that I appreciated from her was introducing her “thought onion” (think of peeling off the layers to expose deeper thoughts).
