Historia
Wit’s End isn’t just a state of mind. It’s the name of a gravel road, the address of a rundown, off-the-grid cabin, 120 shabby square feet of fixer-upper Patrick Hutchison purchased on a whim in the mossy woods of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. To say Hutchison didn’t know what he was getting into is no more an exaggeration than to say he’s a man with nearly zero carpentry skills. Well, used to be. You can learn a lot over six years of renovations. CABIN is the story of those renovations, but it's also a love story; of a place, of possibilities, and of the process of construction.

A cozy story of self discovery
Revisado: 04-21-25
A pleasant, introspective story of the author’s impulse cabin purchase, and the subsequent journey of repairing the cabin and, incidentally, growing into himself. Well-written and entertaining, a cozy read for sure.

Historia
A masterpiece of compelling narrative history, The White Ladder describes the epic rise of mountaineering's world altitude record, a story of ever higher climbs by figures great and small of mountaineering. Daniel Light describes how climbers used revolutionary techniques to launch themselves into the most forbidding conditions. The expeditions illustrate evolutionary changes in climbing style, the advancement of high-altitude science, and the development of mountain climbing as an industry.

Nice dive into some of the earliest mountaineering expeditions
Revisado: 04-06-25
An interesting and enjoyable look at some of the earliest recorded mountaineering expeditions. Although it’s predominantly focused on the Himalaya - how could it not be? - the author also included stories from South America’s’ tallest mountains as well. A good book for mountaineering history enthusiasts, and worth the listen.

Historia
It began as President Ulysses S. Grant's bid for international glory after the Civil War - America's first attempt to reach the North Pole. It ended with Captain Charles Hall's death under suspicious circumstances, dissension among sailors, scientists, and explorers, and the ship's evacuation and eventual sinking. Then came a brutal struggle for survival by 33 men, women, and children stranded on the polar ice.

A fascinating 2-for-1 tale!
Revisado: 03-21-25
Do you like mysteries AND survival stories? This is the book for you! I picked it up because the mystery was draw enough for me, but when the narrative shifted to detail the survival ordeal of a portion of the party I couldn’t put it down! It drags a little in the bits after, but all in all I really enjoyed it. Would recommend.

Historia
A hundred-year mystery lured veteran climber Mark Synnott into an unlikely expedition up Mount Everest during the spring 2019 season that came to be known as “the Year Everest Broke”. What he found was a gripping human story of impassioned characters from around the globe and a mountain that will consume your soul - and your life - if you let it.

Good for avid listeners of mountaineering books
Revisado: 03-21-25
If you’re a fan of mountaineering books, I’d say this is a respectable entry into the catalogue. It’s fairly average in terms of storytelling, nothing about the writing is particularly outstanding or offensive, and Synnott’s Everest experience is interesting enough. It’s a bit disappointing in that the entire set up of the book, the finding of Irvine’s body, sort of falls by the wayside through the narrative, but the author certainly had valid reasons for it. Overall a good book, enjoyable if this is your kind of subject matter, but not a must-read for me.

In June 1867, Mark Twain set out for Europe and the Holy Land on the paddle steamer Quaker City. His enduring, no-nonsense guide for the first-time traveler also served as an antidote to the insufferably romantic travel books of the period.

Mark Twain’s humor holds up
Revisado: 02-23-25
Yes, this book is very funny and yes, not every joke holds up to 2025 social sensibilities. That said! A lot of the travel woes and experiences are timeless, and Twain’s writing style doesn’t fail to make you grin all throughout the book. The performance is awesome too, and really lines up with the tone and the writing.

Historia
In 1714, England's Parliament offered a huge reward to anyone whose method of measuring longitude could be proven successful. The scientific establishment--from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton--had mapped the heavens in its certainty of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution--a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had been able to do on land. And the race was on....

A little slice of true historical drama
Revisado: 02-19-25
I read this on a friend’s recommendation and I’m so glad I did! Although the topic is broad the book really focuses intensely on one man who effectively “solved” the longitude problem. It’s a surprisingly dramatic story, and the performance for audiobook is excellent. Overall really enjoyable.

Historia
At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of seventy-seven climbers since 1954. In August 2008 eleven climbers died in a single thirty-six-hour period on K2–the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges.

Interesting stories with a personal touch
Revisado: 02-07-25
Viesteurs tells a collection of K2 tales that are by turns fascinating and tragic, and he intersperses his own first-hand knowledge of K2 and high altitude mountaineering as he does. It’s not the most complete, exhaustive history there is but each section provides a good overview of the events at hand. Excellent reading for anyone interested in mountaineering.

In this magisterial work of history and adventure, based on more than a decade of prodigious research in British, Canadian, and European archives, and months in the field in Nepal and Tibet, Wade Davis vividly re-creates British climbers’ epic attempts to scale Mount Everest in the early 1920s. With new access to letters and diaries, Davis recounts the heroic efforts of George Mallory and his fellow climbers to conquer the mountain in the face of treacherous terrain and furious weather.

In depth and interesting
Revisado: 01-25-25
Mountaineering books are an interest of mine, and this one didn’t disappoint. I knew the broad strokes of the early Everest expeditions, but this book did a great job of fleshing out every detail, the people involved, and the backdrop of post-WWI England that compounded to lead to Mallory and Irvine’s fateful last summit push. A longer read but well worth it in my opinion, and very well read by the performer.

Historia
The bomb appeared early one morning in an upstairs office of Harvey’s Wagon Wheel Casino near Lake Tahoe, an enigmatic box covered in a bewildering array of switches. A neatly typed letter explained that the box contained 1,000 pounds of dynamite. It was the largest improvised explosive device in American history - and its creator promised to explain how to remove it safely if the casino delivered $3 million by helicopter to a remote landing site in the mountains.

This short book was interesting and fun in equal parts. The story itself is wild, the ingenuity of the bomb amazing, and the audacity of the perpetrator almost unbelievable. The performance does the story justice, too. An enjoyable story to keep me entertained on a few commutes.

Incredibly interesting story of a medical career gone so wrong
Revisado: 11-19-24
This is less a picture of the opioid epidemic overall and more an intense look at the role one man played in it. Eil presents a fascinating read detailing the life of Dr. Volkman, and presenting how a person could end up playing such a huge role in the ongoing medication crisis. Don’t be daunted by the length - I zipped through this because it was so interesting!
