Why are they English?
Revisado: 02-06-23
All English cast for a completely Irish set of characters is a bit odd, but they did a fine job. The story didn’t really end the way I wanted it to, but the slow burn romance between Dau and Liobhan was worth it.

Historia
In 2017, DNA tests revealed to the collective shock of many scholars that a Viking warrior in a high-status grave in Birka, Sweden was actually a woman. The Real Valkyrie weaves together archaeology, history, and literature to imagine her life and times, showing that Viking women had more power and agency than historians have imagined.

Amazing book; completely redefines the way we see the “Vikings”
Revisado: 01-12-23
Not my favorite audio performance, but the book is well worth the read (and reread). I purchased a physical copy to look through the pictures, see the names/quotes, and read the footnotes. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in Scandinavian or ancient history!

Everything was superb except the theme
Revisado: 06-04-20
There’s a general sexist thread through most of Mary Stewart’s books which I can usually get over because I enjoy her style, characters, and plots. But in this one I could not like the main character. Her consuming hatred for one of the antagonists and sympathy for the other seem misplaced and throughly gendered. They’re both greedy and possessive, but I really feel like one was redeemed because he was a man loving a woman and the other was a woman loving a woman. Really well written otherwise and excellent performance, but if you’re sensitive about sexist and racist or nationalist themes, I would not recommend. The characterizations here did not age well.

Historia
The rambling house called Thornyhold is like something out of a fairy tale. Left to Gilly Ramsey by the cousin whose occasional visits brightened her childhood, the cottage, set deep in a wild wood, has come just in time to save her from a bleak future. With its reputation for magic and its resident black cat, Thornyhold offers Gilly more than just a new home. It offers her a chance to start over.

My favorite Mary Stewart so far
Revisado: 05-11-20
It’s a bit slow on the romance at the start, but I didn’t mind that. I loved Gilly and her aunt and all the little features of her life. She’s such a kindhearted and intelligent heroine and Jilly Bond brings her to life so well. This is a wonderfully cozy read. Recommended for winter nights or summer afternoons... or anytime you want a comforting friend.

Historia
Lord Guy Carlton, late of His Majesty’s regiment and weary from the war in France, has only wine, women, and song in mind when he rents Number 67 Clarges Street. He certainly has no desire for a serious attachment! Then his merry eyes spot the lovely but very proper Miss Esther Jones. Though Esther’s business acumen has made her one of the richest women in England, her innocence could make her a victim of the wild ways of the ton - unless the downstairs staff at Clarges Street devise a campaign to reform the rake who is laying siege to her heart.

Endearing Characters and Mediocre Plot
Revisado: 11-18-19
I really enjoyed the set up and the personalities of the new characters, but their romance was rather lackluster. I kept waiting for Esther to either suffer from her prejudice or realize she was wrong, but everything just sort of happens at the end without a satisfying conclusion. The romance and resolution never really feels earned, which usually isn’t a problem for Beaton. But honestly it was worth muddling through the main plot line to get the glimpses of Lizzie’s and Joseph’s and McGregor’s character development.

Greater than the sum of its parts
Revisado: 06-02-18
I was simultaneously impatient for this sequel as I was hesitant about the series and that feeling has not changed. There are so many things I would change... the constant ogling of women, the parade of people who want to sleep with a ginger man with a soul patch, seemingly appropriate behavior in every century, fight scenes that seem to be written for a script rather than a novel, and the list goes on. Still, there are so many things I love about these books that make me want to read more. I love this world, the rich history and detailed lore that accompanies it. I love the cast of characters, from vampiric lawyers (this will never not be funny) to flamboyant talking dogs to petty goddesses. I thoroughly enjoy the main character getting bested and tricked and used as a pawn at every turn. I love the dialogue. I like that each chapter builds up a purpose or sets up a payoff for the next. I like that a fantasy story set in America actually takes place in America, not an underground world or portal to a different realm. Somehow all these things have me enjoying a series I might normally give up on.
If you’re looking for an easy read with a snarky hero and funny sidekick set in America, this is the book for you. I don’t know how historically or mythologically accurate it is, but I imagine it’s probably not what you would normally expect when picking up a book about the last Druid. However, I’m here for all the self-aware Star Wars and LOTR references.
I’d say, if you’re curious, then give it a shot. The things that got me interested are the same things that carry the story, so the only thing that I’ve been disappointed in is the hero falling short of my expectations. However, maybe that’s not a bad thing. That only means there’s room for growth and development, which every story needs.
