Claude Bristol's tough-minded, hard-hitting message remains as fresh and focused today, as when his books were first published, when the subconscious mind was less understood. Times have changed since the late 40's, but ambitions have not, and millions of Americans have drawn on the no-nonsense techniques described in The Magic of Believing to reach their dreams and achieve success.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Every once in a while a series really grabs me...
Revisado: 11-13-17
TLDR; This is a spectacularly fun, humorous and exciting military SF romp.
I saw the good reviews of this series and took a chance. What a lucky find! It charts the adventures of a good ole Georgia boy in one of Earth's mercenary legions -- and the author really delivers. The hero is a clever, opportunistic (and lucky) guy with a good moral compass. The dialogue and situations are often hilarious and there's lots of action in the story. The remainder of the series continues what starts in this book and if anything even gets better!
The book has some unique SF tech elements that were new to me, and lots of fun for the author to explore (one you might guess from the series title "The Undying Mercenaries"). The best though are the many laugh-out-loud experiences where the hero has to work his way out of seemingly impossible (and incredibly dire) situations.
Boyett does a magnificent job with the narration. He gives consistent personification to the various characters throughout the dialogue which adds a lot to the story -- I almost hate to recommend the story in print form mostly because one would miss the extraordinary narration.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Historia
General George S. Patton, Jr., died under mysterious circumstances in the months following the end of World War II. For almost 70 years, there has been suspicion that his death was not an accident - and may very well have been an act of assassination. Killing Patton will take listeners inside the final year of the war and recount the events surrounding Patton's tragic demise, naming names of the many powerful individuals who wanted him silenced.

Yerusalem City is dying, and the king’s fear of invasion renders him blind to the starvation and plague ravaging his people. Only Yirmiyahu the prophet can see the truth; only he can hear God weeping behind her veil in the Temple. He knows the locked city gates will keep no one out - they will only keep the dead in.

Reflections from the cistern
Revisado: 03-05-14
This is a clever retelling of parts of the book of prophet Jeremiah with the undead acting as the result of depravity in Jerusalem during the reign of King Zedekiah (before the Babylonian exile). The justice theology is spot on with some (obviously) free literary embellishments included for narrative purposes (for example, God in the story is cast as feminine, which according to the author's website is to reflect the shekinah -- i.e., the feminine presence of God beyond the Temple veil).
If you're looking for a traditional rough and tumble zombie adventure, then you may be disappointed because zombies are not the main focus of this novel. If you'd like to listen to a tragic religious story with some good horror thrown in and delivered by an excellent narrator, then you should find this book delightful like I did.

They were the young ones, the bright ones, the ones with the dreams. From the Nazi-prowled wastes of North Africa to the bloody corridors of Europe, they honorably answered the call. Another winner for WEB
Revisado: 07-19-12
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lieutenants to be better than the print version?
I haven't tried the print edition, but I don't have time to read a book. I can fit an audio book into the many dead periods of the day that wouldn't be possible to read a print book. That is especially true of the unabridged books. The only problem is turning off a great book like the WEB Griffin books.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lieutenants?
The Greek adventure.
What does Eric G. Dove bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He does a great job of making you feel like you are there while things are going on. He is a great reader.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I just couldn't stop reading it, or should I say listening to it. What a great story teller he is.
Any additional comments?
Can't wait to read the next one.
