Anything beyond the description would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that this book delivers on its premise and then some. Clever and beautiful.

I was hoping to hear tips about how Vicki Robin made it through decades of market ups and downs after early retirement. Instead, I got a loooong, chiding lecture about my terrible materialism and how dumb I must be about my life and my money. The author addresses all criticism directly at the reader as though we're all white-picket-fencers with 2 enormous homes and an out-of-control shopping habit.

I'm a self-employed single person planning to retire in my mid-forties, so basic financial management is not new to me. I *would* like to hear about how she managed decades of changing markets without income, but this book was totally useless in that regard.

If you feel that your spending is out of control and this is your FIRST book on personal finance, it might be worth reading.

Any additional comments?

A note on the audio quality: It's rough at the beginning. Weird pauses and stuff. But the deliver is good, and the editing gets better.

For the story: I would never have finished this book if a close friend hadn't recommended it. The story begins with our extremely young protagonist taunting a dying father with the impending rape and murder of his two girls. The girls are described as "the fat one" and "the older one."

Yeah. It's as bad as you think. The writing is clean and sparse, so we don't get a blow by blow, but we get just the right number of details to really FEEL it.

So, I would have been NOPE and out right there. But I kept listening, and I have to say - I think that opening scene is just a mistake. It was Lawrence's first book. This is the very first scene. It was a mistake. While the whole series is very much "grim dark," that opening scene is not an accurate depiction of the tone of the story as a whole, nor is Jorg quite "himself" in that scene. He's a very dark character, but he's not the type to torture animals or children in the rest of the books, nor does he participate in any more rapes.

Rather than think of the rest of the story as an attempt to redeem of that opening scene, I'd encourage the listener to simply view it as a novice mistake on the part of the author. The rest of the books - all three - are very good. They are grim, but they are thoughtful. The language is pure poetry in places. The world is fascinating, and Jorg is a sympathetic anti-hero if you just delete that opener. Give these a chance.

Narrator can't pronounce common words

The info in this book is fine. It's not groundbreaking, but it may provide you with a few new angles. However, the audio was clearly never edited. The narrator mispronounces the classic book "Lolita" over and over and over... He also mispronounces the author's first name. Who doesn't know how to say Vladimir? I think the narrator must be a robot. Not a single real human listened to the audio before publishing. Unbearable.

Would you listen to Exorcising Aaron Nguyen again? Why?

Yes, because the one-liners make me giggle.

What other book might you compare Exorcising Aaron Nguyen to and why?

It reminded me a little bit of the sharp wit and sarcasm in Gail Carriger Soulless.

What does Lauren Harris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She's a good performer, and her voice is easier to hear in a car than many female voice actors. And you can't read while driving.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

...

Any additional comments?

This super-natural murder mystery is short, sharp, and funny. I hope we see more of these characters.
