Unexpected gem of a story. Not overly sentimental, just a practical description of one young mother thrown into circumstances she didn't want and getting on with things. The author/narrator made me laugh at loud at times and always had my full attention.

Chapter 3 on audible (Chapter 1 in book) is the best chapter. The other chapters give you basic advice given many times before in other books and blogs.

I read this after reading McTiernan's Sisters, which is excellent, so I can't help but contrast the two.
McTiernan's main characters in this book are not as strong as the characters who are quickly killed off or hidden in the past. We don't get enough time with the truly evil or good, and we spend far too much time in the narrative characters' heads. This is why I found the ending far-fetched and unsatisfactory.

The reading is very well done and I encourage readers not to give up on this author whose work has been refined over time.

Not an action-oriented war memoir, but rather a very detailed elegy for fictitious characters. Julie's character is heroic and easy to love. Maggie's is complicated by the fact that Julie has to concoct elements of her backstory. By the time you realize what is going on in Julie's account, you also begin to wonder how much Wein is concocting (vs. actual research).
Dickensian in its labyrinthine detail and at times hard to follow, this book is worth the read. However my next war-read will be nonfiction vs another emotionally manipulating novel by Wein.

Exhibiting respect to all involved in his family's mystery, this documentary maker paid tender tribute to his long-lost family members' struggles. You will eagerly await meeting the protagonists, who deliver real and raw emotional performances with universal truths for listeners.

Just comes down to one question: how long can you tolerate the inner thoughts of neurotic women? My answer: not long.

The author hit me hard in the chapter about not wasting energy on the things you can't control.
Her inspirational stories about prominent figures who have exhibited selflessness and determination in the face of defeat truly inspired me. I highly recommend this book to others.
