Second half exceeds first...
Revisado: 07-01-18
The first part of this book is a lot of information already in the public conscious, with some "hand slapping" about eating too much and too much of the wrong things. Despite that both authors are women a male narrator was used for this title...so some of what might otherwise seem playful comes across as a bit misogynistic. The narrator, however, does a great job of delivering the work with a light-hearted tone. As the book moves into the second half the subject matter becomes a great deal more interesting which is enhanced again, by great delivery. Yen, as always, presents a great deal of technical and scientific information with warmth and a sense of fun.

Almost loved it!
Revisado: 06-07-18
Julia Whelan does a great job with this title. Her narration got me through parts of the book I might not have been able to read. Her voice is always both gentle and commanding. She is particularly strong with male voices---they never sound forced or faked.
I was completely with the story until the last section. I had a very difficult time believing that characters, particularly Cora, took the actions they did without greater emotional consequences. The end felt almost too tidy.
But! I would love to watch this as a movie. And I'd love to see Whelan as Cora.

Historia
You've seen the headlines: Parmesan cheese made from sawdust. Lobster rolls containing no lobster at all. Extra-virgin olive oil that isn't. Fake foods are in our supermarkets, our restaurants, and our kitchen cabinets. Award-winning food journalist and travel writer Larry Olmsted exposes this pervasive and dangerous fraud perpetrated on unsuspecting Americans.

Clear, concise, and relatable
Revisado: 06-01-18
I listened to this book on a cross state drive through Texas a year ago. I've used the info so much since then. From buying cheeses and olive oil to opting against shrimp the valuable insights have stayed with me. Though I don't have the book to refer to (listened to audio) I've used the resources listed in the book time and again. Yen is so easy to listen to and made the sometimes very complicated/scientific language clear and understandable. It was like listening to a smart friend share great new foodie tips. He made it easy to digest and remember.

Great book!
Revisado: 12-30-16
I listened to this book after hearing an interview with the author on the 10% Happier podcast. Beautifully written and wonderfully narrated. Arndt captures the essence of the narrative and all of its wonder and confusion. I couldn't stop listening until I finished.
