Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

I am almost speechless
Revisado: 08-15-24
Outstanding. Beautiful. Powerful. Unbelievably exceptional. The strength of the old man. The sensitivity of the boy. The depth of the writing. The quality of the narration. How could I not have read/listened before now?

Historia
Mercer Mann, a popular writer from Camino Island, is back on the beach, marrying her boyfriend, Thomas, in a seaside ceremony. Bruce Cable, infamous owner of Bay Books, performs the wedding. Afterward, Bruce tells Mercer that he has stumbled upon an incredible story. Mercer desperately needs an idea for her next novel, and Bruce now has one. The true story is about Dark Isle, a sliver of a barrier island not far off the North Florida coast. It was settled by freed slaves three hundred years ago, and their descendants lived there until 1955, when the last one was forced to leave.

Oh, Whoopi, stick to acting!
Revisado: 05-31-24
Such a disappointment. I'm only an hour or so into this book, and I'm not sure I'll make it through. I love Grisham as a writer and Whoopi as an actor, and I was really excited to listen to this book--I even pre-ordered it. But it is a serious struggle to get past Whoopi's narration enough to appreciate the story. It has become very clear to me that a great actor doesn't necessarily equal a great reader. Regardless, I'll try to hold out longer and continue listening (at 1.2 speed, which is needed) to see if the story eventually compensates for the narration. I'm just sorry I didn't wait to read the reviews; had I done so, I would have at least known what to expect. Sorry, Whoopi. Grisham, next time please do better.
Update: It was tedious, but I finally finished. Story started to move along near the end, making WG's bad narration slightly less noticeable. Still, overall, both the too-long story and the narration were disappointing.

First time reading this author. Outstanding. Fantasy premise but I completely believed it. Loved the sister-brother connection. Story was gripping.

Historia
As the only African-American soloist dancing with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland has made history. But when she first placed her hands on the barre at an after-school community center, no one expected the undersized, anxious 13-year-old to become a groundbreaking ballerina. Life in Motion is a story of passion and grace for anyone who has dared to dream of a different life.

Beautiful story but bad narration
Revisado: 03-13-23
What an amazing story by an amazing dancer. The quality of the narration, however, was sub par. I didn't mind the crispness or even the slowness (I just increased the speed), but the narrator clearly has an issue with "ar" words. Her "ar" mispronunciations became increasingly distracting: sparkle is spockle, parked is pocked, car is caw, sharp is shop, Harlem is Hawlem, artistic is autistic, and so on. She struggled with ballet terms, too. This is only the second review I have ever written, both because of bad narration. In the first case, I returned the book for credit because it was simply too hard to finish and couldn't be saved by the story. In this case with Misty Copeland's book, however, and despite the narration, I kept listening because the story was good.

Historia
Growing up, Alice Robb dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer. But by age fifteen, she had to face the reality that she would never meet the impossibly high standards of the hyper-competitive ballet world. After she quit, she tried to avoid ballet—only to realize, years later, that she was still haunted by the lessons she had absorbed in the mirror-lined studios of Lincoln Center, and that they had served her well in the wider world. The traits ballet takes to an extreme—stoicism, silence, submission—are valued in girls and women everywhere.

Sad to leave this review
Revisado: 03-08-23
I really wanted to like this book but - with 6 hours left - i am unable to continue. At best, it should have been read by a professional reader. The author’s voice is not only gravel-like, but it also comes across in a monotone; more specifically, it is difficult to tell when Ms. Robb is narrating her own experiences vs when she is reading about someone else and quoting from her multiple sources. Maybe the story would be better if I were reading it instead of listening, but thus far I have not found it to be an exploration/memoir of her own experience as I had expected. I respect the research that Ms. Robb obviously conducted and the time she must have spent, but I cannot praise the story or its telling as I wanted to do. Very sorry.
