In 1812 the most powerful man in the world assembled the largest army in history and marched on Moscow with the intention of consolidating his dominion. But within months, Napoleon's invasion of Russia—history's first example of total war—had turned into an epic military disaster. Over 400,000 French and Allied troops perished and Napoleon was forced to retreat.

Good read, focus on people. Maps would be nice
Revisado: 04-17-25
This is a good read, well researched. The focus is not so much on geopolitics but on the people who willing or unwilling participated in this campaign. Lots of harrowing stories and some of hope. What is really missing is a PDF with a map of the campaign.

Historia
We have never had to feed as many people as we do today. And yet, we misunderstand the essentials of where our food really comes from, how our dietary requirements shape us, and why this impacts our planet in drastic ways. As a result, in our economic, political, and everyday choices, we take for granted and fail to prioritize the thing that makes all our lives possible: food. In this ambitious, myth-busting book, Smil investigates many of the burning questions facing the world today.

Revisado: 03-28-25
I read several of Smil's books, and they are full of facts and numbers. I tried this in audiobook but was difficult to follow, with so many numbers. Perhaps an accompanying PDF would have helped. However, I think this is best on written form, which I will get.

Historia
By the time Henry Kissinger was made secretary of state in 1973, he had become, according to a Gallup poll, the most admired person in America and one of the most unlikely celebrities ever to capture the world’s imagination. Yet Kissinger was also reviled by large segments of the American public, ranging from liberal intellectuals to conservative activists. Kissinger explores the relationship between this complex man's personality and the foreign policy he pursued.

Interesting & engaging. Not a flattering picture.
Revisado: 02-26-25
Isaacson's biographies are a great read, and never boring. This is the first book on Kissinger I "read," and it paints a less than flattering picture of him, so I wonder if there is some bias from the author. Maybe the book could have been shorter without so much detail of HK's machinations. I did not care for the voice impressions, and I think the narration could have been as good without them.

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Good summary of big events, but not much about people
Revisado: 02-22-25
This is a good summary of all the kings and queens and struggles for power, but not much about how people lived and what customes they had. Maybe to avoid makong the book too long. I stopped at about half.

With meticulous research, breathtaking insight and dazzling, empathic storytelling, historian and novelist Paul Cooper evokes the majesty and jeopardy of these ancient civilizations, and asks what it might have felt like for a person alive at the time to witness the end of their world.

Highly recommended
Revisado: 01-18-25
This is a great book about the rise and fall of several civilizations. Because of my background, I particularly liked the chapters on civilizations in the Americans (Aztec, Mayan, Inca, and Easter Island). Illustrated by interesting facts and quotes from chroniclers and poems/songs, it gives a fact-based and balanced view. I like when authors narrate their own books, and while Mr Cooper's voice is not particularly stimulating, it does a good job. I really loved the end, when the author speculates on how the fall of our civilization would look like. I did not know this author has a podcast, and I am not motivated to listen to it.

Buy it for the recipes, not the "method"
Revisado: 01-16-25
I think the most valuable part of this book are the recipes in the accompanying PDF, very easy to make (somme maybe too easy, e.g. boiled eggs) and attractive presentation. However, I did not find the method proposed very useful, although it is pretty reasonable (savory breakfast, eat veggies, move). I have my doubts on the vinegar step. Inchauspe clearly leans "low carb" as there are very little oats or fruits (other than berries) in her recipes, which I could not do without, but I like that there are a lots veggies and healthy ingredients.

The story of humankind is usually told as one of technological innovation and economic influence—of arrowheads and atomic bombs, settlers and stock markets. But behind it all, there is an even more fundamental driver: Food. In Animal, Vegetable, Junk, trusted food authority Mark Bittman offers a panoramic view of how the frenzy for food has driven human history to some of its most catastrophic moments.

Great history of food, too political at the end
Revisado: 01-14-25
I like the work of Mark Bittman, and love that he narrated this audiobook. About 80% of this book is great, with excellent facts about food throughout history, and I also like some of the recommendations implicit and explicit in the text. The authors avoid extremes viewpoints, which many other authors use to sell books. Only downside is that it gets too political towards the end, and falls in the same as other authors, blaming industry and government for all of our food problems. He even blasts the achievements of Norman Borlaug, which I think millions of people would disagree with. But overall I think it is a good book, and would recommend to others.

Great summary of nutritional advice
Revisado: 12-28-24
this is an excellent source of nutritional advice, combining evidence-based science and common sense. in easy to understand language the authors provide guidance without being paternalistic ot preachy. no conspiracy theories, very common in some books and media, and not ideology, though slightly trending towards vegetarian/vegan. some examples are overused, like the "gas on fire," or the replacing something with donuts. highly recommended

"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Excellent information, a bit conspiratorial
Revisado: 12-21-24
I follow Dr Lustigs work, and admire his crusade against sugar and processed food. in this book he provides great information, and based on science. My only critique is that it gets too conspiracy theory focused, according to this book, we cannot trust doctors, government, drug or good industry, etc., leaving us with very little to do, but read the book and diagnose ourselves using his guide.

Disappointing book and narration
Revisado: 12-20-24
I admire Dr McDougall's work, and was sorry about his passing earlier this year. His principles and guidance seem to work, but the way this book is written and narrated make it sound more like a sales pitch for a vacuum cleaner than dietary advice to improve health, and makes the listening experience unpleasant. I stopped listening in chapter 1.
