This is a children's book
Revisado: 04-11-25
Not as advertised. If the writing wasn't meant to be, the narration was read as if to children. Dinosaurs smoked cigarettes?

Historia
It was the time of the Moon of the Three Rings when the Free Trader ship Lydis landed on the planet Yiktor and junior crew member Krip Vorlund visited a beast show. He was strangely attracted to the owner of the show animals, a delicate and mysterious woman named Maelen. Soon Krip was caught in a vicious struggle by powerful opponents over the fate of Yiktor - and he learned the nature of Maelen's sorcery when he found his mind trapped in the body of a wolf-like creature.

Classic Book, Mediocre Narration
Revisado: 04-10-22
Excellent book. I fondly remembered reading this a couple times in the past, though it has been at least 3 decades since the last time. I had forgotten just enough to make it exciting to listen to again. However Chris Abernathy is a pretty lousy narrator. Most of his reading is in a pretty monotonous voice except where he gets a little excited and tends to swallow or choke out the end of sentences. Chelsea Stephens is mostly OK, although many of her reading tends to get a bit melodramatic.

Nothing unique in sci fi here. Nova is quite good at creating stupid and annoying characters, though.

Historia
In the 23rd century, pioneers have escaped the crowded earth for life in self-sustaining orbital colonies. Soon, she will realize that Nemesis endangers Rotor as well.

Yak, yak, yak, yak.
Revisado: 11-26-21
The ideas in this tale are terrific, but the characters incessant conversations about what is going on over and over gets boring. And Scott Brick's melodramatic reading makes every character annoying. Not Asimov's best.

Decent story spoiled by narration.
Revisado: 05-24-21
Not exactly a classic Andre Norton story, but decent. The biggest problem I had with this one is the narration by Mark Nelson. He is so dull and lifeless a narrator that at times it sounded like it was a computer generated voice.

Historia
For nearly a billion years, every known sentient species in the universe has been the result of genetic and cultural guidance - or "uplifting" - by a previously uplifted patron race. Then humans are discovered. Having already uplifted chimps and dolphins, humanity clearly qualifies as an intelligent species, but did they actually evolve their own intelligence, or did some mysterious patron race begin the process, then suddenly abandon Earth?

The start of a great science fiction series
Revisado: 08-06-18
This is one of David Brin's earliest works, I believe his first novel. Although it does not have the richness and depth of his later works, it is an astonishing debut. I have to wonder how much of what came later in his "Uplift" trilogies was in his mind as he wrote this one. Remember, his next book (and sequel to this - Startide Rising) won the Hugo and Nebula awards.
There were a couple of passages that dragged a little bit, but the payoff of the story is worth it.
Highly recommended!
