Historia
Hugo Ross is perfect for the job as irascible inventor Ambrose Minstrel’s new secretary: young, completely inexperienced, and with an occasional stutter that makes him seem somewhat dim—a mug, in fact. But from his first day, odd things begin to happen. A stranger offers him an absurd amount for an ordinary pair of field glasses; soon, the written offer is stolen from his room. A lovely girl he runs into in the dark one night outside his new employer’s house warns him not to take the job.

Fun, clever, and a little old-fashioned
Revisado: 04-20-25
As usual, Patricia Wentworth wrote a fun and inventive story that I enjoyed a lot. As it was written over 95 years ago, some people might find it a little old-fashioned, but I liked it. There are a few minor mysteries, but this is more of an adventure tale. Anne Hancock did her usual great job reading this story.

She awakes in a dark place. A young woman with a shattered memory, she knows neither who she is nor how she came to be in this abandoned house. All she possesses is a faint sense that someone is lying dead at the foot of the stairs. Horrifyingly, she is correct. In the cellar lies a young woman, her body broken, her head split, her life undone by a revolver’s shell. The amnesiac flees and finally has a stroke of luck: She meets Maud Silver.

The last Miss Silver mystery
Revisado: 03-23-25
This is a good mystery, but it has a somewhat different feel, possibly because it was published the same year as Patricia Wentworth died (1878-1961). Any plot shortcomings, though few, might be put down to it possibly not having the author go through it one or two more times before it was published.

Historia
"It's the most wonderful time of the year," the old song tells us. But that doesn't mean the people celebrating it are always so nice. Criminals get the Christmas spirit, too! In this collection of hilarious short stories, you'll see what the thieves, killers, psychos and scumbags are up to come the holidays...and it's not caroling door to door. Well, not unless they're casing the neighborhood for a break-in, as a rag-tag gang does in the title story.

Great stories full of fun and mayhem
Revisado: 08-22-24
I enjoyed the stories full of Steve Hockensmith's usual brand of humor, crime, and mayhem. They were good stories, and the reader was pretty good, too.
However, if the total running time of the book still reads 7 hours and 46 minutes, then the second story is still missing it's end. I don't think that the story should last much longer, but there is a fault in the book file. I have reported this to Audible, so hopefully this will get fixed soon. The story that is missing it's last few minutes is "I Killed Santa Claus". That is the 4th track, or "Chapter 2".
As a fan of Steve Hockensmith's writing, I really do recommend this book. It's a lot of fun, despite missing the end of that track.
NOTE: Thanks to Audible for fixing the 4th track (chapter 2). It now has an end!!!

Earth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far, far away—no climate change, no war, no Twitter—beckons, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements, but after years of research, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea.

Interesting, thoughtful, and fun book
Revisado: 12-24-23
I greatly enjoyed this book partly because it explored several issues that I have thought about when hearing about how complex the living conditions are in zero-G, and how hard it is on the humans experiencing it. It has often appeared to me that those talking about manned missions to Mars in the next few decades seemed to be leaving the astronauts' short-term and long-term health out of the equations. I came away from this book with a feeling of relief. "Maybe someone else IS thinking about these issues, and maybe this book will bring important considerations to the attention of more people."
And the reader was GREAT!!!
Just one question:
Where is the pdf with illustrations that was mentioned about halfway through the book? I looked, and I'm not finding any link.

Historia
Sir John Waveney has inherited Waveney Hall. A veteran of the Great War himself, his inheritance has come because of the deaths in action of his two distant cousins, leaving him as the next male heir. He hopes to make the acquaintance of his two remaining cousins, Lady Jenifer Marr and Anne Belinda. But Lady Marr proves very vague about her twin sister's whereabouts. Is she traveling with a friend or (as has been intimated) has she been incarcerated in a mental institution? No one seems to actually know, and several people seem bent on frustrating John's attempts to find her.

More romance than mystery, but good

This is another early 20th century Patricia Wentworth novel read very well by Anne Hancock. It's a mystery and a romance, and was great!

Fun re-recording of 90's story
Revisado: 06-20-23
I read this one when it first came out, and listened to it on a cassette library audiobook. This a fun romantic suspense story mostly set during a Film Noir festival. The story had plenty of Jayne Ann Krentz's usual mix of elements with plenty of characters hovering around the edges trying to discuss and make small, independent, noir films. I enjoyed it greatly!

Yeah! One of Carola Dunn's Regency books!
Revisado: 06-16-23
At last, it has occurred to them to record a few of Carola Dunn's Regency Romances! They are well written and have a large amount of adventure, humor, and (of course) romance, and the characters are complex.
The reader was pretty good, but she gets 4 stars because she is a little stiff sometimes. On the whole, she's a good choice for narrator.
Now, can we please have the rest of Carola Dunn's Regency Romances??? (There are quite a few!)

More Eliza Casey!!!!
Revisado: 01-28-23
This is a lovely pre-WWI mystery with good historical details and characters who are both well-drawn and appropriate for the period. It wasn't super-hard to guess the murderer, but the storyline wasn't artificially drawn out either. Susan Lyons is a very good reader who is good with accents, and who makes it easy to distinguish between characters. For some reason, Audible doesn't have this marked as part of a series, but actually, it's the second book in the series. I hope that Audible will fix this error, and get any new books that Eliza Casey writes.
