Historia
In the wake of a significant breakup, Luke Turner is visited by familiar demons, including depression and guilt surrounding his bisexual identity, experiences of sexual abuse, and confusion brought on by an intensely religious upbringing. With nowhere to turn, Turner seeks refuge in London’s Epping Forest, where unexpected, elusive threats seem to have replaced its former comforts. No stranger to compulsion, Turner finds himself repeatedly drawn to the woods, eager to uncover its secrets and investigate an old family rumor of illicit behavior that once happened there.

Powerful Representation
Revisado: 09-01-21
In Hermann Hesse's stunning novel "Narcissus and Goldmund" readers are introduced to the two title characters- a devout monk and a sensualist artist- who, despite their very different paths in life, reflect a shared heart and soul.
This is what I felt like reading "Out of the Woods". As a bisexual man of faith, raised the natural beauty of a forest, I resonated with Turner's internal experiences with a stunning similarity and depth. And yet our path diverged remarkable in our life's choices, both with gifts and costs. To find this kind of representation is rare and powerful.
I have rarely come across a book that his so quickly and deeply impacted me. Beautifully written, unflinchingly honest, and profoundly wise, this is a book I will return to many times.

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 02-09-19
Listening to this book left two deep impressions: First, that I could only hope to ever write even one paragraph with the masterful brilliance of James Baldwin. Second, and more importantly, that I was being ushered into the vulnerable beauty of a world I have no right to ever occupy and in which, even in the brokenness, I was left humbled. This book is a masterpiece.
I also want to know that the voice work by Bahni Turpin is beyond stellar. I have listened to works of literary fiction that were poorly narrated and so much was lost for the reader. Not so in this case. Turpin is Tish.

Far More Than I Expected
Revisado: 10-27-18
It might seem cliché to refer to this book as an absolutely remarkable thing in and of itself, as many people already have, but the truth is that this story is absolutely remarkable. Incredibly timely given the world we live in today, it also seems to contain truths that will carry-on for a long time to come. I look forward to reading more by Hank, whether it is something new or, hopefully, a sequel to this incredible novel.

Historia
In August of 2014, 29-year-old activist DeRay Mckesson stood with hundreds of others on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, to push a message of justice and accountability. These protests, and others like them in cities across the country, resulted in the birth of the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, in his first book, Mckesson lays out the intellectual, pragmatic political framework for a new liberation movement. Continuing a conversation about activism and justice that embraces our nation's complex history, he dissects how deliberate oppression persists, and much more....

Historia
Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America - more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

A Rare Work That's As Accessible As It Is Thorough
Revisado: 05-14-18
This stunning work of history should be a must read for every American (and most people everywhere) to understand the complexity of racist ideas- their origins, their evolution, and the hope for their eradication. Few books of this scope are compelling page-turners like this book is. Ibram X. Kendi has given a difficult but essential gift in this volume.
The narration of Christopher Dontrell Piper is exceptional, making it easy to listen to for hours at a time.

This brilliantly written novel lovingly humanizes a topic that is all too often reduced to ideology. By bringing to life real characters, real families, real experiences, the author does what few people can: Change hearts and minds through a beautiful work of art.
