Too difficult to follow in Audible
Revisado: 03-31-19
With respect, the writer's accent and story was too hard (for me) to follow in Audible. Especially while driving.

Historia
In the town of Ada, Oklahoma, Ron Williamson was going to be the next Mickey Mantle. But on his way to the Big Leagues, Ron stumbled, his dreams broken by drinking, drugs, and women. Then, on a winter night in 1982, not far from Ron’s home, a young cocktail waitress named Debra Sue Carter was savagely murdered. The investigation led nowhere. Until, on the flimsiest evidence, it led to Ron Williamson. The washed-up small-town hero was charged, tried, and sentenced to death - in a trial littered with lying witnesses and tainted evidence....

Probably easier to follow in a book
Revisado: 03-31-19
Wonderful, sad, but important topic. I think I would have taken more away from the story if I had a book in front of me. There were a number of characters and players in the story. The narrator is fine, in fact, good. However, I found myself rewinding quite a bit so I could keep track of "who is who." However, the message is clear that criminal justice is treacherous for all; and especially if one is from modest or poor means, has questionable mental capacity, or vindictive pursuers.

Wish I had read others reviews before
Revisado: 12-01-18
This is an appallingly bad book. Within minutes of starting it was apparent the story was a tired self-absorbing tale. Made worse by Dennis Quaid's horrible narration. I was hoping to hear a unique story since it would have President Clinton's experience. But, the narration was so awful I kept seeing Dennis Quaid's snarky face in my mind trying to sell insurance in his latest TV advertisement.
He had no sense of "narrative-voice" so that I could not tell who was talking or responding in a conversation. I am sorry that this amateur effort was so unpleasant when it could have been entertaining. I am glad for Audible's exchange-return policy.

Historia
Nicolle Wallace's third riveting insider Washington novel tells the story of single day in the life of America's 45th President, Charlotte Kramer. The day commences before sunrise with more than a dozen news crews "embedded" with the president, vice president and the White House senior staff to chronicle a typical day at the center of American political power. While the president is delivering a speech in downtown Washington, D.C., the day takes an unexpected and terrifying turn when multiple terrorist attacks are reported from five different U.S. cities. With the cameras and press corps closely watching her every move, the president navigates the ongoing threat to the nation she loves and has vowed to protect and defend. The explosive events of the day force President Kramer to confront long-simmering tensions among her senior staff and within her immediate family.

Interesting story - awful narrator
Revisado: 07-17-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator attempts to do strong male and female voices. Both are poorly done and come through as confusing and phony. It exhausted me to listen.
Any additional comments?
I like Nicole Wallace in her real-life role as a political commentator...even though I am a Democrat. Therefore I bought the book since I believe her view will be accurate and insightful. I can only slug my way through, however, as the narrator is awful. Ms. Wallace has been poorly served.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Magnificent!
Revisado: 07-17-16
Would you consider the audio edition of A Prayer for Owen Meany to be better than the print version?
It has been years since I read this book. So many years it is hard to remember, except that it was a wonderful book. I had no idea when I downloaded the story, that the narrator would be so talented. The leading theme is Owen Meany's unusual appearance and his voice. This narrator's command of the many fascinating characters adds immensely to the story. In fact, I sent the book to my son but I want him to listen to the audio to get the dimension of Owen's personality as spoken through the narrator.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Prayer for Owen Meany?
I think it was the tender, yet selfish "capture" of the dress dummy for Owen's benefit and his rationalization to help John.
Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but am going to search right away. He is terrific and I will be interested in finding out if he is an actor.
Any additional comments?
I am very glad to have an Audible membership and this book made it worthwhile.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Predictable sappy story
Revisado: 02-26-16
Would you try another book from Ken Follett and/or Simon Prebble?
I doubt it. Written like an amateur.
Has A Place Called Freedom turned you off from other books in this genre?
Possibly
What aspect of Simon Prebble’s performance would you have changed?
His voice and characterization of upper class authorities were interesting but predictable and came across like amateur theater or acting.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. Kept listening since I was in the car and it kept me occupied. But overall it was almost silly with its character portrayals, their relationship to each other, and the characters participation in historic events. As I said in the comments above, the entire book offered sappy dialogue and story line that could have been written by a high school senior.
