Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

It took me months
Revisado: 11-24-23
I finally finished it this morning and it makes me so sad to be done with those characters. I half read, half listened to Audible. The writing is exquisite. You have to re-read/re-listen to passages just for the pleasure of it, or the savageness of it.
I started the Netflix adaptation today. How sick is my husband going to be of me saying, “That’s not in the book.” Real sick.

Historia
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a 50-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace” - the family summer place she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

I almost quit this book but I kept on.
Revisado: 08-08-21
I hated a certain plot point with every inch of my being. But I had to see how these incredibly privileged characters in their very insular world ended up. Would not recommend.

I almost think I would have liked it better had I read it rather than listened to it. Not very likable characters. But I hate to quit a book so I kept on.

Couldn’t get thru the first 2 chapters. Ugh.
Revisado: 09-08-19
Unbelievable. Annoying characters. Unfortunately, the narration matters in a huge and undeniable way on Audible and can make or break the experience. I couldn’t muster thru this.

Kind of a bummer
Revisado: 09-02-19
Pretty depressing. Flat and joyless. Narration didn’t help. Not very sympathetic characters. Their stories needed to be fleshed out more.

The story was tragic and beautiful. It was performed wonderfully. Loved it even more than Where The Crawdads Sing, which was my last book.

So much could have been cut
Revisado: 10-27-18
The overall story is captivating and sympathetic. Ril’s story was my favorite and I would have liked to hear more of her life. Avery’s story was agonizingly slow. Drove me crazy.
