Inconsistent with Book 1

Great Narrator.

I listened to Book 1 of the series and absolutely loved it so much that I immediately bought this book. Book 2 would be ok (3 stars) as a stand alone story, but there are so many inconsistencies between the two books that it was painful to listen to.

1. In Book 1, Lettie has a loving husband named Ryan who helps her by suing her father in law. In Book 2, which takes place a few months later, their son’s father is someone else who is a deadbeat dad who has been out of the picture for years.

2. In Book 1, she had 2 brothers and one of them killed himself. In Book 2, that brother lives with her for a while and is killed. There is also a sister and no other brother.

These are the big ones. It makes me wonder if the new co-author read the first book or if John Ellsworth read this one. Very nweird and annoying.

This is my the first book I’ve listened to by Leslie Tenler and I will be looking for more. She infused the right amount of suspense and revealed the killer without some absurd twist that so many authors use to make it impossible to guess the killer. She then continued the story with a good deal of interaction between the hero and killer. It was a nice balance.

I’ve listened to many stories narrated by Marguerite Gavin and have enjoyed every one.

I liked the stories of books 1-3, but despised the narrator more than any other of the nearly 500 Audible books I have purchased. I’m glad I did.

This narrator is good. She makes Josie and the supporting characters likable, correctly pronounces nearly all of the words, and is enjoyable to listen to.

The story was fair. It was quick to hook me in and the ending was a complete surprise due to the lack of any type of foundation to possibly connect the guilty party to the crime.

However, the biggest issue was the robotic voice of the narrator when speaking in the 3rd person. It was sooo boring and distracting especially since she did a good job in the first person with the characters.

Great Story! Worst Narrator Ever!

I have listened to hundreds of Audible books. This is one of the best stories, but hands down, the worst performance of all.

The performer’s voice and inflection make the main character sound like a petulant teen girl who has no redeeming qualities when if you listen to the story, she is complex and should be liked and cheered for. Making it worse is the narrator mispronunciation of tons of words.

Stories are supposed to be believable which actors accomplish by playing characters as they genuinely are. That doesn’t happen here. Who can believe a character is from the USA when they can’t correctly pronounce Maryland, ate, Aaron, and many many other words.

Where are the directors, producers, and editors who should have caught these issues?

I had the same complaints about the first book but got this one because I liked the story and wanted to push through because I read that there is a different narrator for later books in the series. If not for the future change of narrator, I would have skipped right over this book.

Another great story from Lisa Jackson. I love that her stories are not formulaic and easy to predict.

I often complain about her narrators but this one was perfect. A pleasure to listen with correct pronunciation and amazing range of inflection.

Great Story - Not So Great Narrator

I love just about all of Lisa Jackson’s stories and this one lives up to the best of them. However, the narrator is constantly mispronouncing words either through a lack of knowledge or use of British pronunciation- both are annoying.

It’s also clear that the producers are asleep at the wheel for all of this narrator’s Audible books as they allow not just mispronounced words but also misread words which make no sense to get into the final product.

These constant errors take away from the reader’s enjoyment of Ms. Jackson’s excellent and thrilling stories.

Good Story - Bad Narrator

Overall, the story is good. It starts out slowly and gets better.

However, it is difficult to listen to the narrator. She is monotone and boring. The story is set in Pennsylvania but the narrator, while she has no discernible accent, is clearly not from the USA as she pronounces many words (taco, yogurt, ate, etc.) differently than an American person would and doesn’t even know how to pronounce the state of “Maryland.” It extremely annoying.

Narrators should be able to speak in the pronounce common words in the same manner as the people living where a story is set, whether in the USA, Britain, Australia, South Africa, etc. It makes the narrator more believable.

I know I would have enjoyed this book much more had the narrator not been so boring and had she properly pronounced common words.

I’ve listened to most of Blake Pierce’s stories as I love them. This narrator, however, is hard to listen to as her cadence always seems off and she mispronounces so many words. You’d think editors would at least catch and fix the mispronunciations.

I typically listen to over 40 books a year with most being action/adventure or espionage stories, but this was the best Audible original and the best overall story and performance I’ve heard in a long time, possibly the entire 6 years I’ve been listening to books.

The characters have depth and are narrated with so much feeling that I felt like I was in the room with them.
