Historia
On a warm summer evening in 1991, seventeen-year-old Julia Parker was murdered in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York. An area known for an exorbitant level of violence and crime, East New York had come to be known as the Killing Fields. In the six months after Julia Parker’s death, 62 more people were murdered in the same area. In the early 1990s, murder rates in the neighborhood climbed to the highest in NYPD history. East New York was dying. But how did this once thriving, diverse, family neighborhood fall into such ruin?

Clear description of a muddy subject
Revisado: 02-24-25
An expansive and well researched document of the tactics used by mortgage lenders, specifically the FHA, during the Nixon administration.
You will learn exactly how an area becomes blighted over time, and how the white collars never even get a tinge of soot in the process. The worst being an offender might be shunned at the country club by his peers. Considered punishment enough.
You will understand how areas get worse block by block. You will know the futility of recourse. The veil will be lifted from a mysterious subject.

Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

The writing of a master.
Revisado: 10-16-24
Another solid new original story, filled with beautifully crafted characters, all with their own silent agendas and reasons revealed as the story unfolds. No overuse of words, told succinctly and clearly. That is the mark of an excellent story in my opinion, and Erdrich hasn’t just fallen off the turnip truck.
I reveal nothing except high praise as I don’t want to spoil the book. But I loved it.

Historia
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Refreshing
Revisado: 05-19-24
So well written and thought out. I was delighted how many times the freshness of this book just washed over me and immersed me into the very believable lives. The love story emerges triumphant despite the complexity. My first but not last book by the extremely good writer!

Sweeping Epic tale
Revisado: 04-16-24
I really liked the authors commitment to authenticity, her use of specific locations in the war zones of Vietnam for example, after having real vets read her first draft. She herself started the book decades ago, and she knew she wanted to wait until she felt mature and ready enough to finish the book. To fully grasp the material. The author has worn a missing vets name and date he went MIA on her wrist since she grew up during the war. She acknowledged him in the post script of the book The Women.
Not exactly light reading, many passages are as harrowing as the soldiers and nurses had to endure, but the reader has no choice, the story keeps going at a fast clip.

Historia
Sisters Anna and Jennie live in a historic bungalow on the Chicago River. They’re tethered to a disquieting past, and with nowhere else to go, nothing can part them from their family home. Not the maddening creaks and disembodied voices that rattle the old walls. Not the inexplicable drownings in the area, or the increasing number of bodies that float by Anna’s window. To stave off loneliness, Anna has a podcast, spinning ghostly tales of Chicago’s tragic history. But when Anna captures the attention of an ardent male listener, she awakens to the possibilities of a world outside.

Thought provoking ghost story
Revisado: 04-02-24
The author is fascinated by Chicagos history, weaving a tale of lost families connected to a certain riverfront home, where two young women struggle to find their way. Cynthia Pelayo can stand shoulder to shoulder with Algren, Sinclair, Wright, and know her words speak for the forgotten and disadvantaged lower working class. Plus a pretty good ghost story. Fascinating and captivating.

Symbolic sweetness
Revisado: 03-18-24
If you took Armistead Maupin and Anne Patchett and mixed them up with a dash of Lawrence Block and a dollop of The Ramones you’d end up with Margot Douaihy. Her originality blazes a new trail with the characters in this second novel in the series.
Yes the book is short and sweet, like a punk concert. But there is power between the pages, and you are left wanting more. In this case, that’s a good thing. I feel like I discovered a great new band no one knows about yet, before the bloated commercial success ruins them. I know the writer will not let that happen. At least not now in 2024.

The love stories within
Revisado: 02-07-24
I wasn’t crazy about the book when it started, the narrator must have said the word ‘accompanist’ so many times I wanted to scream.
Then, midway through, as the love stories developed, that’s when Patchett excels most. She captures love and emotions so beautifully. Then I was happy at the end for having read the book, and sticking with it.

When she stumbles across the ad, she’s looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss - a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten - by the luxurious “smart” home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn’t know is that she’s stepping into a nightmare - one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder.

It’s the setting, the Scottish accents, the mystery. Being transported to a different world where your troubles seem light makes this a fine tale for me. I just love the writer and the reader, Imogene Church. She does a wonderful job reading as usual.

Creepy and disturbing, but also enjoyable!
Revisado: 10-13-23
At first, I was really put off by the horrible circumstances certain characters had to endure, then along comes Holly. She made the book very much worth listening to. I would say King did illustrate the polarity between different schools of thought regarding COVID-19, just like in our free thinking society.
Loving Holly and want to see and hear her again very soon.
