Historia
The lives of six female superheroes and the girlfriends of superheroes. A ferocious riff on women in superhero comics. From the New York Times best-selling author Catherynne Valente comes a series of linked stories from the points of view of the wives and girlfriends of superheroes, female heroes, and anyone who's ever been "refrigerated": comic book women who are killed, raped, brainwashed, driven mad, disabled, or had their powers taken so that a male superhero's storyline will progress.

Masterful and evocative narration, just incredibly well done.
Revisado: 12-07-24
From the first momemt I was invested in these women's stories. Catherynne M Valente has crafted a spotlight, one that illuminates the dark corners, the hidden underbelly of the superhero genre. Men with unrestrstrained power, and the women aroumd them who are sucked dry by it, even after death.

Historia
Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

Helped me view the Ashley Madison debacle with some compassion for the victims.
Revisado: 03-13-24
Not an especially deep dive into the Ashley Madison hack, but I really liked how the reporting was driven by the people whose lives were effected. The Ashley Madison subscribers, reporters who were in the thick of the story when it broke.
Interesting, informative and short enough to consume in one sitting.

Historia
When Athena Greydon’s fiancé ends their engagement, she has no choice but to move into the Spite House she recklessly bought him as a wedding gift. Which is a problem, for several reasons: The house, originally built as a brick middle finger to the neighbors, is only ten feet wide. Her ex’s home is literally attached to hers. And Dr. Matthew Vine the Freaking Third—AKA the uptight, judgy jerk who convinced his younger brother to leave her—is living on her other side, only a four-foot alley away.

Compelling characters and excellent narration
Revisado: 02-17-24
Funny, Sweet and heart-breaking all at once. Matthew is broody, steady and responsible. Athena is damaged and at the end of her tether, after Johnny (Matthew's brother) abruptly ended her their engagement.
I loved how Athena and Matthew's relationship started out slow, a deep friendship.
The, I'm assuming (without checking with Professor Google) fictional, town of Harlot's Bay is definitely a character in the novel. Cute, lively and inclusive with a spicy back story.

Historia
Once happily married with a young son, Jess takes to the road to escape her failed relationship and the disappointment of losing touch with her son. Four years into a nomadic existence, she has learned the hacks of van life and promotes a fantasy version of it on Instagram that bears little resemblance to her eclectic community of fellow travelers. But it’s that camaraderie, and the vastness of the great outdoors, that gives Jess the space she needs to find out what really matters to her. And act on it.

Historia
Rose Barnes has got curves for days—and to Angus Drummond, the big, bearded contractor working on her new house, she's the perfect thorn in his side. Little does she know Angus is perturbed on a daily basis by his attraction to this cheery woman with her sunshiny enthusiasm, her kindness, and her beautiful body. Angus feels he has a debt to pay to the world and doesn't deserve love until he pays it. Best to keep his mind on his work and his hands to himself. But the more Rose sees of Angus's gruff thoughtfulness, and the more rusty laughter she surprises from him, the more she wants him too.

The Narrator for Angus had a cadence to his
voice that I really did not care for. And, although I liked Angus as a character, his behavior toward's the end was a bit too self-centered.

Historia
Last year, Rachel Bacharach met the man of her dreams at a Hanukkah party — and then her outgoing best friend Tamara swooped in and “called” Oz Caplan for herself. It’s a typical outcome for the dependable, bookish Rachel, who is never able to extinguish the spark she immediately felt for Oz. But being secretly in love with her best friend’s boyfriend all year hasn’t been easy.

Short, Enjoyable Holiday Themed Story
Revisado: 12-21-23
The author, somehow, managed to make the "Pining over best friend's boyfriend" thing work. The excellent performance and Rachel's integrity helped erase what would normally be an icky situation.
Oz was a bit too clueless sometimes and the short length of the story required some of the psychological reason's for the shallowness of his relationship to be glossed over.
But, it was really fun to listen to.

Historia
Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie’s life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle—from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she’s trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

Nice to have on in the background, narration is excellent.
Revisado: 12-08-23
Pretty average story, but pleasant overall. Romance is lackluster.
Demeter is a bad boss, there are reasons, but still. Katie's treatment of Demeter, while she is a paying customer at her family's farm, was just ridiculous. And the co-workers who are sabotaging Demeter, that is just messed up. But, as a plot device, really has a lot of holes.l, if you look at it closely.

An excellent student from a poor, traditional family in Seoul, the narrator has absorbed the same message her whole life: Only a boy can provide the family with dignity and wealth. Not her. Not her three sisters. Receiving approval only for uncomplaining sacrifice, she has resolved to take on her family’s troubles. She is a good girl. And she knows what good girls must do.

Historia
All of London is abuzz over the imminent arrival of Wulfric Bedwyn, the reclusive, cold-as-ice Duke of Bewcastle, at the most glittering social event of the season. Some whisper of a tragic love affair. Others say he is so aloof and passionless that not even the greatest beauty could capture his attention. But on this dazzling afternoon, one woman did catch the duke's eye - and she was the only female in the room who wasn't even trying.

Narrator's Performance was Excellent
Revisado: 10-04-22
I have always loved this story, my favorite of all the stories of the Bedwyn Siblings, but I was finding it a bit tedious towards the end. Christine's constant, I shouldn't love you but I do but I shouldn't marry you, but maybe I will. I think I tend to skip over a lot of that when I read a book and that is much more difficult with an audiobook.
I think Christine's trauma from her first marriage was real, but it was so lightly touched on I think she came off as shallow. I never got that impression when I read it in hardcover, years and years ago, but she seemed shallow this time and that is disappointing.
I have really gone off historicals the last fews years. References to the servants standing around, waiting for orders from their "betters" and their "horrible" lower class accents, stuff like that just rubs me the wrong way nowadays.
