Historia
Living in a squalid room in St. Petersburg, the indigent but proud Rodion Raskolnikov believes he is above society. Obsessed with the idea of breaking the law, Raskolnikov resolves to kill an old pawnbroker for her cash. Although the murder and robbery are bungled, Raskolnikov manages to escape without being seen. And with nothing to prove his guilt and a mendacious confessor in police custody, Raskolnikov seems to have committed the perfect crime. But in Dostoyevsky’s world of moral transgressions, with its reason and its consequences, Raskolnikov’s plan has a devastating hitch.

A well-woven tale
Revisado: 09-18-24
The book has a great mix of perspectives and storytelling. It also helped that the audio version makes it much easier to keep track of different characters. Overall, an exciting and thought-provoking book.

Historia
From a leading expert in Japanese history, this is one of the first full histories of the art and culture of the Samurai warrior. The Samurai emerged as a warrior caste in Medieval Japan and would have a powerful influence on the history and culture of the country from the next 500 years. Clements also looks at the Samurai wars that tore Japan apart in the 17th and 18th centuries and how the caste was finally demolished in the advent of the mechanized world.

Really connects all the dots
Revisado: 09-28-23
I would recommend this book because it does just what the title says. As someone who has known bits and pieces of Japanese and Samurai history, this account really pulled it all together in an interesting and insightful way.

Good Story about lesser known part of the Civil War
Revisado: 06-22-23
A fun story that has a good dose of adventure without neglecting or glossing over the worst parts of war. As with anything in the Civil War, the book can only tell part of the story, but overall, it has a good balance of all of it. The focus on the war further West is also great to learn about because it is often ignored in the larger scheme of things. The performance is done very well too making the book even more enjoyable.

A good life in context
Revisado: 04-07-23
Though not always about William Marshall himself, the book uses his life well to explain the transformative period of English history. It has some exciting episodes of William Marshall’s live as well so provides good enjoyment as well as good information.

Historia
As a young, ambitious soldier, Winston Churchill managed to get himself posted to the 21st Lancers in 1899 as a war correspondent for the Morning Post - and joined them in fighting the rebel Boer settlers in South Africa. In this conflict, rebel forces in the Transvaal and Orange Free State had proclaimed their own statehood, calling it the Boer Republic.

A fun listen to learn about the Boer War
Revisado: 01-31-23
The performance of the reader was excellent, perhaps the best I have heard for an audiobook. The book comprises two different pieces by Churchill. The first one was definitely better, but the second part was good too especially when it converged with the story in the first part at points. Overall, I would recommend it to anyone interested in military history.
