Historia
Emily Hawthorne lives in the well-heeled Noe Valley of San Francisco…but just barely. With less work than she would like at the yoga studio, a pile of debt, and a fraught past, she can no longer afford her tiny condo. When she meets the charming Penelope “Pip” Stone and her young daughter, also beset by financial woes, she agrees to take them in as roommates. But Emily’s stroke of luck turns out to be another twist of the knife: Pip is a professional squatter who has no intention of paying rent. And Pip doesn’t want to share the condo.

Aggravating slow with Painful predictability
Revisado: 03-09-25
So predictable! Which tested my patience to limit, the only mystery is how many describing words this author could come up with to say the same things on repeat, this at most should have been a short story. The protagonist was sooooo frustrating, she describes her feelings in these thought monologues that go on and on. I was over this title after the first few chapters but wanted to know the ending. Don’t waist a credit, kindle unlimited has it for free so I didn’t loose out on anything but my time.

Historia
For his whole life, the boy has lived underground, in a basement with his parents, grandmother, sister, and brother. Before he was born, his family was disfigured by a fire. His sister wears a white mask to cover her burns. He spends his hours with his cactus, reading his book on insects, or touching the one ray of sunlight that filters in through a crack in the ceiling. Ever since his sister had a baby, everyone's been acting very strangely.

Good mystery, yet infuriating
Revisado: 11-24-24
I liked the mystery of why they were in the basement the characters were interesting BUT I hated the ending, the family was horrible the parents the grandparents all of them were selfishly obtuse. *spoiler* What they put their daughter thru, they slowly tortured her, forcing her into the basement, made her bare a child with her brother who rapped her, and how they killed her from there violence. Like she hadn’t paid enough from her childhood mistake they hid behind protecting their son but it was all about self preservation. Then the little boy gets out of the basement but leaves his sister behind. Letting the parents and disturbed brother live out a peaceful basement existence. They terrorized this girl who had faults but compared to the others was minor. The boy at the end of the book explains how he did nothing but bask in the freedom of life outside never bringing any of those monsters to justice.

adults.

Missed the opportunity to be great
Revisado: 03-08-24
Author missed the mark.. I have visited Colorado Springs, Manitou, and pikes peek, this area holds a thrilling curiosity. Within the caves and high elevation wilderness train ride up a secluded area of the mountain, and the seemingly impossible trail 2,744 steps to the top of the mountain enchants the imagination with oddity’s of the unknown. Instead the author focused on trivial interactions, inconsequential relationship’s, that were so insignificant and unbelievable. On top of that the character Development was vast, yet insubstantial. Zero resolve with almost all of these characters, leaving the reader with more questions than answers….ie. why Carlee? how did they kid nap her, who were the others? Why the many pointless interactions with the reporter? Instead the story lightly brushed on the meat and potatoes of suspense. Yet describing at length irrelevant interactions within the characters. Siiiiigh it COULD have been so good BUT it just wasn’t

Where is the beef!?! Beef= finished ending
Revisado: 10-24-23
I really liked the narrator. I also really liked the story. It was interesting gives you a list of what the family courts are like in another country but the lack of resolution at the end I had to double check to make sure I didn’t accidentally push fast forward because it was so quick and not a lot of explanation which is weird because there was a lot of description in the writing and what was going on in the story leaves you with a lot of questions unanswered.

This series has become my new favorite. Goldman’s writing is one of a truly gifted storyteller, I love the protagonist Shep. His quick wit and charm is what seals the deal for me. The character development is fantastic. The twists of the story are perfectly unpredictable.
