Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-10-24
I was excited to listen but this never really got going. Same story told from different perspectives which I expected, but it just didn’t grab me. Beautifully written in some places but overall boring and disjointed. Okay it won a Pulitzer which gives it redeeming value perhaps but this book seemed to have much greater potential. I thought it was just ok.

Masters of the Air is the deeply personal story of the American bomber boys in World War II who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep. With the narrative power of fiction, Donald Miller takes you on a harrowing ride through the fire-filled skies over Berlin, Hanover, and Dresden and describes the terrible cost of bombing for the German people.

Excellent and comprehensive both in content and narration. This is one of the best WWII books I’ve experienced. A must read for anyone interested in this theater of the war.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Simply put: outstanding!
Revisado: 02-06-23
Big surprise. Full of insight and the culture of the period. Still shocking to hear about how women were (and undoubtedly still are in some circles) treated. But this is not a ‘woman’s’ book. Also some pretty insightful commentary on life’s little challenges-and rewards! Leaves me wondering, for example, just how well our doggies understand our language. Certainly more than we give them credit for. I expected good but this was great all around. Don’t hesitate!

Historia
In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

The Blitz is in full force. Bombs rip relentlessly through London, destroying buildings, and rattling confidence. As Britain falls further into chaos, the Littlefields - ever-dedicated - must keep fighting. Jeremy prepares to fly a mission without his trusted Eagles. Still held as a POW at a high-security facility, Lance grows more, and more desperate to make an escape. And thousands of miles apart, Claire and Paul - both armed with top-secret war intelligence - experience a similar struggle: They know more than they can say. And that knowledge places their siblings in grave danger.

Keep Going
Revisado: 06-09-22
Another grand entry in the series. Yes, the characters are beyond perfect and the narration somewhat cheesy at times (my opinion) but the overall story is enthralling and I thoroughly enjoyed the immersive characters as history unfolds at their feet. Was looking for something to rival Winds of War and while this may not equal Wouk’s epic it is a worthy addition. Intriguing insight into the Resistance across several continents all the while demonstrating the British determination and allied fight. Jumping right into the just released volume 4. Keep them coming!

Historia
As the first Axis aircraft streak across English Channel airspace, so begins a battle for the ages; one that will determine the trajectory of the war. Braced for engagement on their individual fronts, the Littlefields plumb the depths of courage and ingenuity to defend their beloved Britain. Fresh from the slaughter of Dunkirk, youngest brother Jeremy is called upon to create a French Resistance network composed of former naval officers. At MI-9 headquarters, Claire Littlefield has devised an intelligence coup that could change the tide of the war.

Worthwhile
Revisado: 05-28-22
This second book in the series builds on the story and in my view is better than the first. The inspirational resolve of the British people and their stand against tyranny is truly inspiring and well-represented here. Certainly a worthwhile listen which provided significant insight into the Battle of Britain and the beginning of the Blitz that I found both informative and enthralling. The narration still leaves something to be desired, but does not detract from the overall story and is either improved or has become more familiar. I’ll continue the series and do recommend it. The author has clearly done his research and there are many valuable details here for anyone interested in learning more about this period of history.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Better than expected
Revisado: 02-11-22
… and I expected a lot! Great listen filled with rock and roll stories and from an obviously unique perspective. Dave perfectly captures that intangible connection between the performer and audience. He genuinely sounds like a fan at heart and seems so relatable, grounded despite his fame and fortune. He really sounds like a nice guy! I recently saw an interview where Pink paid the Foo Fighters the greatest compliment: the band really gives their all every night and they make you feel like the show is better because you’re there. This passion also shines throughout this story. Bravo Dave!

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Highly recommend. Was deterred by some of the reviews but now at the end I wish it wasn’t over. Fantasy yes but for me filled with many profound and real insights. Thoroughly enjoyable and often very real if you allow it to be. Excellent listen and overall one of the most enjoyable. Actually one of the first books that I very well may do again. Bravo!

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
