Something missing

The story and the performance could have been more emotionally charged given the subject matter. Perhaps it is the sensibility of the culture but I waited and waited for the fire but there was none. Even the confrontations fell flat.

Dead babies

This is the third book in the series. The plot twists are very interesting, but I don’t get the continuing dead baby theme. I’m stopping here while the last baby is still alive and well.

Dramatizations are not for me

This dramatization was like sitting in the next room listening to a television program. There was so much action taking place that could have been vocalized but instead there was music and sound effects. Not enjoyable for me.

The narration was awful!

The story line was a good one, and in the hands of the right narrator, this would have been a highly rated novel. The narrator had an odd cadence. Throughout the entire book there were mispronounced words and pauses every 4 or 5 words that were like commas in the middle of statements. It sounded like a dry run that should have been re-read for publication. I will never listen to this narrator again.

Not my thing

I have listened to several audio dramas and have come to the conclusion that they aren’t for me. To me, they are like listening to a television show; very different from listening to a book.
As for this book, I don’t feel like this story matches up to the Black Book novel. The relationship between Patti and Billy was quite different, and many questions remained unanswered.

Wow!!!

This is truly the best book I have read in a while. I loved the way the themes intertwined throughout the book. It was a moving and insightful glimpse into the experiences of many African American people during a time when the races were struggling through segregation and Jim Crow. As a darker complexioned person I have wondered why more fair skinned Blacks didn’t slip across the color divide. The insights in this novel helped me the see the pros and cons through the lenses of the characters. Great read!

I am always fascinated by personal stories, and this book does not disappoint. The presentation of historical events from the viewpoint of a young boy growing up in the middle of history is fascinating. Trevor is both a gifted author and narrator. You will enjoy this presentation.

Wow !!!

I am absolutely blown away by this book. Tiffany Haddish risked so much by choosing to be so real, and so honest. I cried, I got angry but mostly I laughed. I believe that she accomplished her goal of writing a book that can help people. THIS book is worth the listen.

The Burke family rocks!!!

I am a huge fan of James Lee Burke and out of curiosity I ended up on his official web page. Upon discovering that the real Alafair, Burke not Robicheaux, is an author I immediately looked for her stories. This book had me from the first lines. I was listening at all times of night. My husband tried to get me to go to sleep but I had to know what happens next. The narrator Xe Sands was terrific. Overall five stars!!!
