Nice work by the narrator. He missed some of the cadences, and wry comedy, of Tarkington, but I would certainly listen to more books by him. Hope he continues to do unavailable ones.

The book isn't perfect--is surprisingly bad at times--but hang in there. Twain pulls it all together in the end.

Wish there were more Martin Jarvis recordings. He is a one-man acting troupe. In addition to the dialogue, he reads the prose the way it was meant to be read. He's a lummy cove, he is.

Everyone mocks this book, and Stoker, for being muddled beyond comprehension. Wikipedia opens by calling it one of the worst books in the world, citing three sources. Some even attribute it to the strokes Stoker had suffered during this time in his life. Anti-racists jump on the faults in order to tee off on the author.

Here's the problem: we're all reading a version of the book rewritten and condensed to 28 chapters (from 40!) by some anonymous editor 14 years after Stoker died. It's apparently the most widely available version of the book. I can't say if the original is any good, but let me tell you: I kept scratching my head listening to this and wondering if I, or Stoker, had accidentally skipped some chapters. Turns out a deranged publisher had.

This audiobook differs slightly from the original 1911 collection with the same name. It swaps, confusingly, A Dream of Armageddon for A Vision of Judgement, and adds The Crystal Egg. The titular story and The Country of the Blind are two of Wells' greatest. I also loved The Lord of the Dynamos. It's like a racist parable, yet more strangely humane than we'd see from any writer today.

Can't recommend this book enough, but particularly Simon Prebble's audiobook narration, which takes it to another level. One of my favorite performances.

…narrator taking on more obscure works when he could’ve done the 1000th version of Gatsby or whatever. Boehmer has a pleasant voice and is a passable actor, but not a literary reader. He continually botches the rhythm of the prose, eliding sentences for no reason and then pausing slightly mid-sentence, so the listener can’t at first be sure where the clauses belong. This is doubly a shame since it’s Melville’s easiest reading. Boehmer also doesn’t know how to pronounce certain words like portentous, or crag. He says the latter like crayg.

The book is fantastic. Ernest Hemingway was right to praise it so highly. Peter Joyce is one of the best, most underrated narrators. I wish I could find out more about him, and at least thank him for his work.

Great reading by Heald but the recording leaves out the postscript by the fictional Knickerbocker.

Kitchen has a fine voice but is not a natural reader. At first I could never quite relax with his jerky delivery and the occasional tripping over words. It’s as if every new clause surprised him. I don’t think he did much prep but just recorded it cold. However, either I got used to it or he warmed to his task, because the audiobook soon cast its spell over me and I am happy to recommend. I urge it, in fact!
