Historia
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Loved it and hope to see a book come from this. Hopefully, after Don helps save democracy with his equally important activism.

Historia
In the tradition of Jonathan Swift and Mark Twain, America Fantastica delivers a biting, witty, and entertaining story about the causes and costs of outlandish fantasy, while also marking the triumphant return of an essential voice in American letters. And at the heart of the novel, amid a teeming cast of characters, readers will delight in the tug-of-war between two memorable and iconic human beings—the exuberant savior-of-souls Angie Bing and the penitent but compulsive liar Boyd Halverson.

I love both Don Winslow and Ari Fliakos. It’s a match made in heaven, like James Lee Burke and Will Patton.

Historia
Heartwood is a kind of tree that grows in layers. And as Billy Bob's grandfather once told him, you do well in life by keeping the roots in a clear stream and not letting anyone taint the water for you. But in Holland's dusty little hometown of Deaf Smith, in the hill country north of Austin, local kingpin Earl Deitrich has made a fortune running roughshod and tainting anyone who stands in his way. Billy Bob has problems with Deitrich and his shamelessly callous demeanor, but can't shake the legacy of his passion for Deitrich's "heartbreak-beautiful" wife, Peggy Jean.

NARRATOR HORRIBLE
Revisado: 03-03-23
I tried three times to listen to this book. I just can’t get past the narrator. It’s his job to read the book - not try to pretend to be a Shakespearean actor. I’ve tried to speed up the narration to 1.5 and then 2.0. Alan Solar still drags out every word out. Unbearable!! Now, they said I couldn’t return the book? Seriously? I’ve purchased hundreds of books and EVERY TITLE of James Lee Burke. I can’t rate the story but I love every one of Burke’s books. This is THE WORST with no chance of giving the story a chance.

Great history in the story and the characters. A good narrator can make or break a book. Will Patton could read the Apple Terms and Conditions pages and I’d listen to it.

Loved it! I got shown the Barbara Kingsolver series of books and wondered what rock I’d been under to just find out about her. Absolutely loved her newest Demon Copperhead. Narration can make or break a book. So far… they’re making them even better.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

What the h*** is going on? Narrator blew it!
Revisado: 11-02-22
I thought I must be suffering from early dementia. I was a full 9 hours into this audiobook before I went to see what others said about this book in the reviews. I seriously got angry when I found out from others had the same issue and that the narrator was reading different people that were telling different versions of the story. Her voice not only stayed the same, there was no tips like letting the listener know it was a different character. I’ve never been so frustrated by wasting 9 hours thinking I was going crazy. I refuse to go restart this book. It won’t help because I shouldn’t need to do the work of figuring out what the heck character she is. I feel like I just heard the phone book being read non stop.
