Can’t tell whether this is a celebration of Cherokee heritage or men’s genitalia and sexual proclivities...

Boring, yet compelling.

Next to no plot, but I wanted to see it to its conclusion. It was very well written and narrated, and informed me of life about life and race relations in the frontier Midwest in 1875, which unfortunately, we have not transcended in the intervening 150 years.

Historia
Behold the man: stinking, drunk, and brutal. Henry Drax is a harpooner on the Volunteer, a Yorkshire whaler bound for the rich hunting waters of the arctic circle. Also aboard for the first time is Patrick Sumner, an ex-army surgeon with a shattered reputation, no money, and no better option than to sail as the ship's medic on this violent, filthy, and ill-fated voyage.

Quite the Tale
Revisado: 07-02-17
Well paced. Excellent dialogue. Thoughtful and even a bit wistful. Flawlessly narrated. May not be for the faint of heart, but it captured the harshness and brutality of both nature and man in a realistic and captivating manner.

Enjoyable but has some shortcomings
Revisado: 06-03-17
For a book whose focus was so centered on the internal conflicts of the main character, an irascible, elderly, NY Jew, more effort should have been made to find a narrator who was better equipped to embody this guy. The story was interesting and it was well paced, but the narrator just couldn't capture who this person was. Perhaps coming from a Jewish background causes me to more critical. I had also finished listening Phillip Roth's Sabbeth's Theater where the narrator really nailed it.

Historia
Sofia, a young anthropologist, has spent much of her life trying to solve the mystery of her mother's unexplainable illness. She is frustrated with Rose and her constant complaints, but utterly relieved to be called to abandon her own disappointing fledgling adult life. She and her mother travel to the searing, arid coast of southern Spain to see a famous consultant - their very last chance - in the hope that he might cure her unpredictable limb paralysis. But Dr. Gomez has strange methods that seem to have little to do with physical medicine.

Somnambulistic
Revisado: 05-14-17
The book seemed like it had potential, but I had to stop after about 120' into it for fear I would fall asleep at the wheel if I continued to listen. The narration was ponderous, and the story just was not compelling enough to continue listening. If the narrator was trying to embody the voice of a depressed protagonist, she achieved her goal. Perhaps I missed something by not persevering, but there's too many other great books on Audible to listen to.
