Historia
A deeply personal novel of identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of belonging and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part satire, part picaresque, at its heart it is the story of a father and son and the country they call home. Ranging from the heartland towns of America to palatial suites in Davos to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, Akhtar forges a narrative voice that is original as it is exuberantly entertaining.

a good listen and an interesting story. A mix of personal anecdotes and socio political observation/critique. Some is lightly thought provoking, some just entertaining. A bit unstructured but not in a confusing way, just in a 'collection of pivotal moments' way

Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation between Simon, Gladwell, and Gladwell’s oldest friend and co-writer, journalist and Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the conversation flows from Simon’s music, to his childhood in Queens, NY, to his frequent collaborators including Art Garfunkel and the nature of creativity itself.

interesting, informative, entertaining, inspiring. I really enjoyed listening, I learnt a lot more about the great artist Paul Simon and his creative pathways. Malcom Gladwell and Bruce Headlam are great to listen to, and top communicators. Well worth listening.

Historia
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

good fun, poignant social commentary, great narrat
Revisado: 10-20-21
Fun and entertaining. Really enjoyed listening to it. Sharp social commentary told through a very fluffy storyline... filled with people I don't know from my own world, at all! I definitely enjoyed it more after listening to an interview with John Boyne about his experience being lambasted in the social media following his book 'My Brother's Name is Jessica'. The context gave this story, The Echo Chamber, a much deeper resonance for me. Richard E Grant is an EXCELLENT narrator, now firmly in my top 3 (maybe top 2).

Historia
In the 1840s, a ship's boy, cast ashore in northern Australia, is taken in by Aborigines. Sixteen years later he steps out of the bush and inadvertently confronts the new white settlers with their unspoken terrors. A searing and magnificent picture of Australia at the time of its foundation, focusing on the hostility between early British settlers and native Aboriginals, Remembering Bablyon tells the tragic and compelling story of a boy caught between both worlds - the civilised and the primitive.

I loved this, highly recommended. The imaginative, evocative and very lifelike story, the absolutely beautiful and journeying writing of David Malouf, bundled together by Paul English, one of the top 3 narrators I've heard. The ending parceled up more quickly, in a more poetically distant or reminiscing tone than I expected from the rest of it. I will definitely read another David Malouf (next time as a book) - and definitely seek out other books narrated by Paul English. if you're pondering, then do it :)

Historia
A well-established legal doctrine that a defendant must 'take their victim as they find them'. If a single punch kills someone because of their thin skull, that victim's weakness cannot mitigate the seriousness of the crime. But what if it also works the other way? What if a defendant on trial for sexual crimes has to accept his 'victim' as she comes: a strong, determined accuser who knows the legal system, who will not back down until justice is done? Bri Lee began her first day of work at the Queensland District Court as a bright-eyed judge's associate. Two years later she was back as the complainant in her own case.

definitely a good read listen. I had mixed responses to the content but at the end it felt like time very well spent. Great having the author reading her own work too - she has a voice that is very easy to engage with, and of course her interpretation of the writing is unquestionable

Historia
The Tsar of Love and Techno begins in 1930s Leningrad, where a failed portrait artist employed by Soviet censors must erase political dissenters from official images and artworks. One day he receives an antique painting of a dacha inside a box of images due to be altered. The mystery behind this painting threads together the stories that follow, which take us through a century and introduce a cast of characters including a Siberian beauty queen and many others.

EXCELLENT story
Revisado: 08-14-21
Really imaginative and, for me, educational. Clever, witty - even laugh out loud funny at times, despite the intense content. I loved this story. I also koved the first narrator Mark Bramhall, the whole story came alive in his hands The biggest weak point was the third narrator Rustam Kasymov who sounded like a robot. I kept disengaging and having to rewind to listen again; or fighting the urge to fast forward; very frustrating, I can't understand how he was kept... I should have bought the book to read his parts instead, and may still do because the story really is great. (the second narrator Beata Pozniak is fine - not great but not bad)

For years, rumors of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Historia
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Historia
Yejide is hoping for a miracle, for a child. When her in-laws insist upon a new wife, it is too much for Yejide to bear. It will lead to jealousy, betrayal and despair. Unravelling against the social and political turbulence of '80s Nigeria, Stay with Me sings with the voices, colours, joys and fears of its surroundings. Ayobami Adebayo weaves a devastating story of the fragility of married love, the undoing of family, the wretchedness of grief and the all-consuming bonds of motherhood.

reasonably entertaining
Revisado: 12-03-20
Started out well and in a setting with which I am unfamiliar which made it more interesting. Also some interesting twists in the plot to keep the attention. But it became progressively bogged in The Importance and Heartache of Parenting without enough substance to fill out that tired story.
The narrator was good with accents and variance for neutral or male or female sounding voices and it worked really well. But she added WAY too much emotional tone for my liking, at times making the characters petulant and emotionally wobbly or self indulgent when that's not how I interpretted the text. it grated a lot when the narrators tone conflicted significantly with how I was hearing the text. I like narration that allows flexibility for listener interpretation, and room to read / hear other nuances, especially when it's not the character directly speaking.
overall it was an ok listen and I definitely wouldn't return it as I have done with other audio books. But I wouldn't recommend it to friends and retrospectively I wouldn't have chosen this book for myself.

Moving from Provence to New York to Gloucestershire, from the savageries of a childhood with a cruel father and an alcoholic mother to an adulthood fraught with addiction, Patrick Melrose is on a mission to escape himself. But the drugs don’t make him forget his past, and the glittering parties offer him no redemption....

excellent narration, engaging story
Revisado: 11-07-20
one of the best narrators I've heard, with a story at all too late between melodramatic and drawn out through to gripping and deep. Initially feels almost like a soapy, then quickly takes a dive into broader social commentary and sharp observation of life. but gets bogged down around the third quarter, in tracking 1 persons struggle to progress. Overall a story told through vivid characters and engaging, interesting plot. The narrator is awesome which really helps
