Decent story ruined by narrator and editor

The story is okay but the narrator was bad. HE STARTS EVERY LINE loud enough but [whispering] ends in a small voice. This could have been fixed by any competent editor. NORMALISE the volume.

I probably missed 1/4 of the details in this series but, if you live alone in a VERY quiet place, it is worth it if you get all 3 volumes for 1 credit.

The decisions/actions of the characters make it read like a Young Adult novel. The narration was decent but I will not be reading more of this series.

This was my first encounter with Sylvia Plath and I absolutely adore her prose. The narrator was also wonderful.
*BUT*
Between every chapter HarperAudio decided to play a very loud series of piano chords. Many people put on their audio book to fall asleep. So there you are, warm, drifting off to sleep to lovely words and
DING! da_DIN-dingDING DIIING! It may have been tolerable but whoever edited this put the narrator volume at normal but cranked that damned tornado siren of a piano up to 11.

I will be reading more Sylvia Plath but I am gun-shy about HarperAudio ad will read the reviews carefully before getting anything by them, in the future.

Not just a mediocre story but I know that this author is capable of so much more so -1 star for that.

As a fan of Science Fiction for 50 years, I kept waiting for the science to wow me. Nope. Have some magic.
The writing is competent enough and the narrator is ok, if you want FANTASY, but as soon as I hit the "submit" button for this review I am getting my money back.

There is a lot of swearing in these novels (a bonus, in my opinion) so my title does as well.

Anyone who wants FOUR good modern noir detective novels cannot go wrong with this collection. The narrator also did a wonderful job and I will be looking for more works by him and this author.

I am in my mid 50s - a true Grumpy Old Man - and yet this coming-of-age story, which featured a female heroine, made me smile with amazement. A wonderful story. And KUDOs to Christina Moore who narrated the audiobook, for bringing all the characters to life so charmingly.

Over the top violence? check.
Cool female lead? check.
Doses of humor? check.

Leave your disbelief at the door and this novel is a great cyberpunk-superhero-anime style joy-ride.

There are so many reasons for me to dislike this book. They are, in no particular order:

* A young-adult (coming of age) story but I am in my 50s.

* The narrator was mediocre at best; with his mostly monotone voice, it was sometimes hard to keep track of who was speaking.

* Does EVERY form of entertainment nowadays have to contain a "zombie apocalypse"? Seriously?

My personal grumpy-old-man gripes aside, the characters were good and the story was well written. If they had hired a better narrator, I probably would have given it five stars.

Review for the audiobook version, narrated by Jeff Hays

Critique 1:

The hero of this book can "Improve" people by looking at a ghostly "character sheet" and "upgrading" their stats, abilities or whatever he wants. This means that there are several long passages in the book where he has to look up the "points total" gained from owning each person that day. This audiobook lasts 11 hours and 46 minutes and, if you string them all together, there is probably 30 minutes of a man reading a spreadsheet aloud. It felt like forever! I came very close to quitting and returning the book for a refund before the halfway point.

Critique 2:
Slavery exists. It is still the modern day but yeah, you can own people and this "hero" owns several people - and goes on to keep buying people because it is the ONLY way this story can work. Slavery and magic.

EVEN WITH THE ABOVE, the book is not horrible, thanks in huge part to the narrator, Jeff Hays, who not only switches voices flawlessly [dozens of characters here, both genders], but Mr Hays or the recording studio added special effects when needed. e.g., when talking on the phone, the person's voice is tweaked to sound like a phone speaker, or a combat suit or what have you.

The cover says it all - a novel about super heroes. okay so, if you go into this as if you are about to watch an anime series with the WAY over-the-top characters, motivations, etc. Then this will be enjoyable. Even with the long, boring reading of spreadsheets.
