When a story gets a boost
Revisado: 09-22-23
This is the fourth in a series and ties the series in a nice pink bow. Books like this serve a need for easy listening and little for adding insight to a truth or a new perspective to carry in Life. However, the beauty of the voice of "Duke Defoix" deserves to singled out as something worth remembering.

Marrillier is a spell casting author but misses
Revisado: 02-12-23
I have enjoyed other Marillier novels over the decades, so much that I purchase her work when I see it. She does character development so well. I appreciate her focus on female heroines.
The story begins well enough but this one includes battle sequences that do not appeal to my temperament and choices in topics.
Marillier's audible performance in this purchase has a voice that is not annoying but lacks this melliferous voice or intimate style of my favorites.

Lack of a driving plot
Revisado: 10-27-18
The most flawed part of the novel is the lack of a driving plot. In spite of the phenomenal idea of creating a sympathetic heroine who is crippled by war, the character did not deliver the depth of character and explosive scenes that entails this context. Maybe it is me but I am finding the sexual scenes gratuitous

Author Shows Promise
Revisado: 09-02-17
I purchased the audiobook based on reviews. While the reviews over hyped the entire package, I want to encourage the author to keep working at her craft and developing her talent.
The elements in storytelling I hope she pushes to the next level are a few. First, revealing the inner thoughts and emotions of the main character. I did not feel a three dimensional inner landscape of the psyche but a sketched out version instead. Better integration of the explaining of the world with the action in he story. The characters around her have a compelling personality through their use of language and their idiosyncratic behaviors. These characters should provide a strong foil to accentuate the main character.
The narrator's voice had the youthful tone but lacked color and variety in depicting the characters. I often became sleepy and bored.
I believe artists are all working to become better. Some criticisms help to see your work through the eyes of those who experience it. I hope my description can help the writer and narrator get to the next level. Good luck.

Performance gem
Revisado: 03-26-17
If you enjoy reading books that offer great characters and character development, this story is a winner. The producers did it a deserving turn by choosing this narrator. It is easy to be swept along in this unwinding of a tale by all its elements that hit the right notes.
I look forward to the next in this beginning series. While serial novels are uneven in plot and themes, there is hope that one can reach the excellence of its original work.

In 2012, Emme Wilde can't find the right guy. She wants to feel that swept-off-your-feet dizziness of true love. But so far, her dating life has come up short. Star Trek geek? Nice but too serious. Beginner Level Writing
Revisado: 11-12-16
I read every night and have for decades so I have become impatient when reading authors at the start of their career. This book commits a multitude of sins: dull characters, telling the reader rather than have the characters unfold the story, too familiar situations, no driving action, mystery or insights through character development. The prose is not special either. I hope the writer will find a fresh or compelling character next time.

A Surprise
Revisado: 09-12-15
After decades consuming novels this reader understands that it is the occasional gem that feeds my addiction to stories. This is one book that stands out for its many strengths: a successful attempt of two perspectives, switching time lines, believable characters, a great sense of physical place and social culture. I liked the clarity of the characters and especially the unusual and non-stereotyped roles they played of mother, father, relative, and friends.
I intend to read more from this very gifted and skilled author.

Historia
On one of the city's hottest nights, New York Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas is sent to Central Park - and into a hellish new investigation. The victim is found on the rocks, just above the still, dark water of The Lake in the park. Around her neck is a single red ribbon. Her hands are posed, as if in prayer. But it is the eyes - removed with such precision, as if done by the careful hand of a surgeon - that have Dallas most alarmed.
