This is the most accurate depiction of high school debate that I’ve ever read, and an excellent retelling of P&P.

The story os fine. I wish I could just read it, though. The male lead is doing this smarmy used car salesman voice, and it’s hard to believe that he’s at all genuine. It isn’t the dialogue. It’s his interpretation of it that’s off. I really wanted to like this, but he’s just icky.

I really wanted to like this book. I’d heard some great things about it.

The story develops slowly, but it isn’t developing slowly because it’s developing characters. For instance, we’re told that Camille is best friends with Amber, but we’re never shown the two having a loving interaction. When something happens to Amber, I found it hard to care because she seemed like such an icky character.

Instead of characterization we get pages and pages of setting description and descriptions of clothing, but those descriptions aren’t giving us much beyond set dressing. They tell us a little about the world, but they don’t have any emotional resonance. We don’t understand Camille any better because of how she interacts with her world.

There are whole sections of the book where nothing seems to be happening. At one point, I fell asleep and woke up a half an hour later to find that all of the characters were still just getting ready for a party.

I like frilly fairytale plots. I enjoyed the Selection books. I liked Caraval. I didn’t think they were staggering works of genius, but they were good to curl up with on a rainy afternoon. This book seemed to be promising, but it definitely would have benefited from better editing.

There are several repeated lines that do not appear in print versions of the book, weird cuts, and odd inflections. The reading and audio production made the story hard to follow. I had to turn it off and read the print version.
