I'm glad I finally got around to this Christie masterpiece. I wonder if John W.Csmpbell was thinking of this when he wrote Who Goes There?

Historia
In this striking and bleak, yet luminous debut collection, Nathan Ballingrud, winner of the inaugural Shirley Jackson Award, uses the trappings of the Gothic and the uncanny to investigate a distinctly American landscape: The loneliest and darkest corners of contemporary life. Ballingrud’s stories are love stories. They’re also monster stories. Sometimes the monsters collected here are vampires or werewolves.

Great potential. Uneven quality.
Revisado: 10-12-19
First and last are good. Stories in between seem a little sophomoric. I don't think they made the right choice of narrator. His homespun accident did not suit some of the stories. Sometimes it felt like I was listening to a narration by comedian, Ron White., and it would take me out of the story.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

Could have been a third shorter.

Great narration. Cool premise and had a great first act, then grew tedious in a few sections thereafter. Should have been about a third shorter.

Historia
A powerful novel examining the nature of evil, informed by the works of T. S. Eliot and Freud, mythology, local lore, and hard-boiled detective fiction, Sanctuary is the dark, at times brutal, story of the kidnapping of Mississippi debutante Temple Drake. She introduces her own form of venality into the Memphis underworld where she is being held.

Deceptively brilliant.
Revisado: 03-31-19
I feel like its narrative structure inspired Pulp Fiction. I found the first third of the book a little slow. and annoying. During the second third I started to think "This is pretty good and there is a lot more going on under the surface than first meets the eye. In the midst of the last third it hits you in the face that this book is not only brilliantly constructed, but very innovative narratively considering when it was first published. Its a dark, mean, deep and amazing novel. I loved it and recommended it highly.

The female narrator. in the first section was poorly cast. Her voice and style are more suited to reading a children's book, YA or a romance novel.

The hero of John Kennedy Toole's incomparable, Pultizer Prize–winning comic classic is one Ignatius J. Reilly, an obese, self-absorbed, hapless Don Quixote of the French Quarter, whose half-hearted attempts at employment lead to a series of wacky adventures among the lower denizens of New Orleans.

Revisado: 01-27-19
Fun read, but it also felt a bit like homework. Very well written, and the character of Ignatius certainly earns its place as a literary icon. Ultimately, thought, it seems like the story of he books origin is more interesting than the book itself.

When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

Historia
When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Anticlimactic.
Revisado: 01-24-18
Starts with a promising premise and interesting structure that shines a light on how a person can be changed by a good or bad marriage, then devolves into too much sleight of hand supposedly shocking character and motivation reveals that are either telegraphed too blatantly (it's easy to see the first big "raising of the curtain" coming), boring, or just plain unbelievable (that last one is with a pointed finger at two "twists" toward the end of the book). One can only suspend their disbelief so much.
Also, the book spends a great deal of tiime building up the main antagonist as a manipulative monster, but the when-and-how resolution of that character arc is handled in such a way that it leaves one feeling cheated and underwhelmed. When a villain finally falls in a work of fiction it's safe to think the authors don't want our response to be "meh."
Though the book was co-written by an accomplished author and seasoned editor, it very much felt like a first novel in that it starts with an intriguing premise, style and structure, but then stumbles in places with too much exposition and trickery with a lack of gravitas and cathartic payoff.
In regard to the narrator, I don't think she was the best choice for this book. While she handled the female characters fairly well, she didn't seem to have a lot of range. However, it was her handling of Richard's voice that took me out of the story. Her choice of delivery inflection for him made his lines sound melodramatic and soap opera-like and, like a lot of female narrators doing male lines, her "male" voice comes across as overly rough, unrealistic and just plain trying to hard.
Note to Audible: I really wish Audible would consider using both a female and male narrator for all their selections (especially in novels written in third person perspective, though I understand this could tonally be a problem for books written in first person). Talented voice actors can play a range of dialects, tones and inflections within their same gender and I think it would make the listening experience more dynamic.
